VeriSign on Thursday said it that it will increase the fees it charges for Internet domains ending in .com or .net.
Starting October 15, VeriSign will charge $6.42 for .com domains and $3.85 for .net domains, it said in a statement. The fees are charged to domain registrars such as GoDaddy and TuCows, which typically handle domain registration for customers.
The new prices represent a 7 percent price increase for .com domains, for which VeriSign currently charges $6, and a 10 percent rise for .net domains, which cost $3.50.

| This is still a long long way from the 35.00 a year I paid in 1996 to Network Solutions (minimum of 2 years at a time). I doubt Godaddy will pass it on. |

"VeriSign Domain Price Increase Criticized"
The cost increases are necessary to pay for the increased volume of domain name system queries, the company asserts.
The Internet is about to get more expensive, without justification some believe. VeriSign, the company that manages both .com and .net domain name registration, said Thursday that the registry fees for domain names will increase starting Oct. 15.
The registry fee for domain names -- effectively the wholesale price -- will rise from $6 to $6.42 for .com names and from $3.50 to $3.85 for .net names. This represents the first registry fee increase since the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) established the fee structure in 1999.
Elsewhere, domain prices are going down. Last month, the government-backed China Internet Network Information Center said it would reduce domain name fees for English-language .cn names to 13 cents.
According to Shanghai Daily, the purpose of the promotional price drop is to increase use of the .cn domain and to enhance national information security, a reference presumably to the risk of dependence on overseas domain name servers.

I was just thinking this reminded me of Ebay's nickel and diming sellers with listing fees....
On the surface this isn't a big increase, but it adds up, may happen again in the future, and comes with no apparent increase in services or enhancements.
Just like Ebay. |
