In what looks to be brewing into a mutual smear campaign, London-based Privacy International has ranked Google among the worst top Internet sites for privacy protection, and Google is reportedly taking the watchdog group to task.

Privacy International isn't scheduled to officially release its report ranking privacy performance of the top sites until 7 p.m. EDT Saturday. But the Associated Press and other media outlets, who apparently got sneak previews, are reporting that Privacy International assigned Google its lowest possible grade, a category reserved for companies with "comprehensive consumer surveillance and entrenched hostility to privacy."

I found another news story this morning that said eBay was one of the best in safety and privacy! HA!

I still get a dozen or more spoofs a week, and my Paypal and eBay accounts have been gone for 7 months... that's privacy and safety??? I get the newest spoofs, the newest threats, and they are safe? I can't even log into the accounts, but they get my info?

I have yet to have any reason to question Google's security. So what if they place a cookie on my computer to track my browsing history... I appreciate that. Then when I search for info on Widgets it will match up with my location and give me the best results. Smear campaign? My bets are once again on eBay and Yahoo as the culprits.

There's a big segment in this MSNBC documentary (a Google Video) on what a Google search can reveal about a user as well as the simple fact that Google never gets rid of old search results.

It's also worth seeing for the other places where privacy, big business and the government all clash

I agree with Xbay. I've been using Google Checkout since about Nov. I have yet to have ANY spoof about a sale thru GC or any other problem with Google. eBay and PayPal are another problem tho. Spoof after spoof with my full user ID much of the time too.

And eBay and safety -- what a joke that is. Just look at the Vladuz problem eBay has had ongoing for over 6 mts now. I doubt all the hijacked account holders think eBay is safe.
