Hey, we've just registered our business and would like to reigster our domain name. I waas thinking of registering multiple domain names then doing one of two things. Either registeirng more with very specific names, or discarding a few and only leaving one or maybe 2 that we actually like.
Ok, so what does the internet community generally think of ergistering multiple to one site? I heard it may be frowned upon but just want to get the census, isn't that what a redirect is?
Also, If we pay for 10 names let's say (although we probably won't even come close) and we want to discard 9, how can you get rid of them and get your money back? We won't be looking to make a profit just want a refund kind of thing... Anyways tell me what you all think :). Talk to you soon! |

| I do it. but I don't redirect unless it is through a link(earthfragments.com is my only redirect). Just make an index.html page for each of them, all worded a little differently. Then search engines will index each one, therefore giving you more results. |

| o ok cool, what about when you buy multiple domain names, can you get rid of them? Because we want to pick a bunch and go with the best, but if we ask peopple's opinions before we buy then someone will snag them. |

I don't see a problem with registering multiple domains pointing to one site. You can even mask so users don't even realise they are been redirected.
A big tip. Don't use trade names or brand names. Even similar names could land you in trouble.
As for refunds. I don't think you can get a refund on a domain name however if the domain name is good you could always sell it. Also note you cannot sell a domain name until it is 60 days old from registration.
Hope this helps. |

Earthfragments.com yes I agree with what you say but would than not result in more cost. Each domain name would need a hosting account.
Would it not make more sense just to redirect to an optomised page for that domain.
Therefore only one hosting plan would be needed and each page could be optomised for the redirect.
Correct me if im missing something |

| Wow that helps a lot. No we were not planning on say registering walmarts or anything so that way we get cheap redirects like that, just different variations of our name so that way we can pick our favourite. We're also going to do the indexing I think. Like I think it's buy.com or something, has www.electronics.com registered and redirects to their electronics part. That's a really good idea but all the peopular domain names like that I'm sure are taken by now.thanks for all the info it will help us a lot! |

| my only problem with redirecting is I find it a waste of money when your first starting out, very few people just randomly type in a domain name hoping to get what they want, I think its best to spend that money on advertising... :) at 10$ a domain name, a few seems to be a waste...of course my thoughts |

I don't know anyone that types a random name into their browser. So getting traffic this way is pointless.
I also agree that you need to keep control of start up costs.
You must also remember a good domain name can send you thousands of visitors a day.
You need to consider free traffic from search engines. A good domain name that is optomised can send you hundreds of thousands of visitors a year.
Therefore a $10 domain name is a wise investment if used correctly.
You need to research what people search for when looking for your products then register a domain name(s) that would be easy to optomise for the search engines.
Just my 2 cents |

| My wanting multiple domains has nothing to do with random things typed in for sites. It's about search engines. Electronics.com is gonna show up, if someone types in electronics, on the top or close to it I'd imagine. But my real concern is multiple names until we decide on one. this way we can choose one by poll or w/e, and not have to worry about some lurker snagging it |

You can not get refunds for a domain name and if you are paying $10 dollars for a domain name that is too much. godaddy.com has them for $8.95 right now. really only a dollar difference but if keep that domain for a 100 years you will save $100 dollars
You can have multiple domains going to one site but you should concentrate on one domain as your main one. You will get better search rankings if your link density is concentrated on one domain instead of spread across multiple ones. |

| Ok I was just wondering about getting a bunch to test out which one sounded the best or had the best ring to it. Yeah we were gonna go with godaddy lol, 8.95 rounds to 10 lol, all th competition they have listed there sells for higher than 10 anwyays, so no comparison |

In my case, I had webpages that I closed down, and was sitting on(with hosting) that I'm just going to let expire eventually(but I paid a couple years in advance).
Even if you are paying for the extra hosting, it's still cheaper than most google adword campaigns. |

You don't necessarily have to have different hosting accounts for the different names. Like, I use one hosting account that allows me to host on 5 different domains for $7.95 - the bandwidth and disk usage is shared between the domains - I just have to stay under a total allotment. My other account with them is a little more expensive but includes MySQL databases, forum hosting, OSCommerce, and a bunch of other bells and whistles. Can also set up emails, autoresponders, etc on both of the accounts.
So, round, if I had a bunch of domain names and only one true website, I would make an optimized website page for each one that would have the menu click over to the regular website. But, say I have 5 "doorway" pages - each of those would be optimized to a different keyword or phrase. Vary up the content a bit, so that the search engines don't ding you for duplicate content.
Free software that's easy to use for SEO is WebCEO. It would help you figure out how to optimize the different doorway pages, and/or help you pick relevant keywords. Even if meta tags are decreasing in significance, the optimization of the text to increase relevance for a certain search phrase is important.
Contact me if you want to know who my webhost is, or clarify some of what I rattled off. They're cheap, flexible - but not the most reliable. I do experience downtime, but it's not a whole bunch of time, and usually occurs in the wee hours of the morning, so I don't worry too much about it (I have 10 websites hosted through them, so I guess I trust them enough). |

| Wow Jen thanks for all the advice. I'll definitely contact you with any questions, but right now we're going to contact our distributors and get started, then worry about the site after. I didn't want to contact any distributors yet because my computer had trojans and I just finished reformatting... but for some reason my internet is slow as hell! Not familiar with this computer stuff. Anyways we'll be looking into all the rules and such on multiple domain names, because Google has their guidelines and such that we want to abide by. Anyways, I have to tend to my ailing computer, when we're a little more advanced in our biz I'll definitely be contacting you for help. Thanks to EVERYONE for your comments because you've all offered, kindly, very valuable information! I shall talk to you all soon :). |
