Some odd family heirlooms have made their way into the possession of the Illinois unclaimed property division over the years: False teeth. Human ashes.

The department also comes across more conventional keepsakes like gold pocket watches and strings of pearls. And now it plans to offer them to consumers looking for a bargain.

On Monday, state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias announced that his office will begin auctioning off the contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes on eBay.

IL has been auctioning off its old evidence property as well for a long time, on its own auction site. Some of the items, you have to go to Springfield (state capitol) to pick up - they don't always ship items.

Surprised they are choosing eBay instead of their own state site for this one - IL has a tendency to want to keep every dime (and nickle, penny and other possible valuables) within its own state borders!

I sure hope that the state treasurer has his Illinois auctioneer's license! The state of Illinois realized they might be missing some pocket change opportunities, and implemented legislation a year or so ago that requires anyone living in the state of Illinois wishing to use an "auction venue like eBay" fo selling any item for anyone else to go through the state-run auctioneer's course, and get their auctioneer's license. Yep - like selling your items on eBay is equivalent to standing in front of a crowd, behind a podium, smacking a gavel on the accepted bid!

This was quite an expensive little venture for online sellers such as myself, who had to stop selling or listing things for others. The course was expensive, and at last check, the license was over $200 as well. Not pocket change!

I sure hope that Mr. Giannoulias can show HIS Illinois auctioneer's license if he plans to sell on eBay!

You CAN do that, right, Mr. G?? Mr. G???? Are you there? Are you listening??

(We currently live in IL, hoping to leave after the first of the year. )
