Merchants affected by Yahoo's system outage on Monday have more reasons to be upset, as US consumers parted with $733 million online for the day.
Unhappy Yahoo merchants may be a little more bitter than they were earlier this week. ComScore reported a 21 percent increase in spending on the Monday after Thanksgiving, compared to the same day in 2006.
Non-travel retail spending reached $610 million for 2006's Cyber Monday. The 2007 edition blew past that without breaking a sweat, as people apparently returned to work or home after the holiday and set their browsers for "Spend Now!"

Do you think that Yahoo's loss was due to their closing the auction site..??

To be honest postman, I couldn't get my link to the article to work tonight but thought once yahoo closed it's auction site there would be no more trading/sales at that particualr site.
Apparently some sort of merchants still use yahoo as an online selling venue. More than likely, it's just large retail stores, not small sellers. |

Thanks for clearing that up for us DDT. I've got a couple of local freinds who use yahoo for their host servers for their web sites but didn't realize that many people actually used yahoo for that particular service.
That explains the users panic a little better  |

Unlike ebay yahoo actually sends you an email apologizing for their system being down. Ebay just leaves you hunting for answers.

OMG, you mean yahoo doesn't create excuses through "canned" emaiL responses? About the only emails I get from ebay nowadays are:
HERE'S YOUR INVOICE  |

Online holiday spending has reached nearly $16 billion, marking a 3 percent increase compared to the same time period last, according to the latest data from comScore.
The most recent week ending December 6 reached 4.6 billion in holiday spending, heavier than any individual spending week in 2008 but still below two individual weeks in 2007. The week began with strong weekday spending, led by $887 million on Cyber Monday, but ended on a quieter note with negative year-over-year growth rates during the weekend.

update:
Online holiday shoppers have spent a total of $24.8 billion so far this season, representing a 4 percent increase over last year, according to the latest report from comScore.
The most recent week got off to a slightly sluggish start, with sales of $854 million on Green Monday (Dec.14) down 1 percent compared to a year ago, but was followed by three strong spending days that each surpassed $800 million. Tuesday, December 15 was a record spending day reaching $913 million, the first such day to surpass the $900 million mark.

Stores in the snow-battered East Coast may have been sparse this weekend, but shoppers kept spending online. Retailers spurred sales with new discounts and shipping offers to make sure gifts arrive by Christmas.
The storm that battered the East Coast, from the Carolinas to New York, may have put at least a $2 billion dent in "Super Saturday," which usually accounts for $15 billion worth of sales nationwide, according to weather research firm Planalytics.
Mall traffic was down 10 percent on Saturday, but it surged 65 percent Friday night as more people went out before the storm. Retailers that have must-have items like Toys R Us, Best Buy, and one-stop shops like Walmart are poised to recover the lost sales better than the rest of industry, weather research firm Planalytics said Monday......... |

It may spike again soon.
The National Weather Service has stated that another similar storm is brewing. |

For December 2009 Only
Total sales - Up 115%
Amazon sales - Up 281%
Ebay sales - Up 40%
ebay average sale $16
amazon average sale $24
Sales across all sites would have been higher but all my suppliers ran out of top sellers by December 10. I cannot be mad at them since I was one of the very in my niche that was up for 2009.
Amazon customers were for the first time much more annoying than ebay customers. Amazon customers as whole acted like whiny spoiled children. ebay customers always followed up with us to correct the few problems that did arise and they were generally pleasant to deal with. this may be a first that ebay was the no hassle venue for the holidays.

Congrats Cohiba, here's a quick report from the record/cd/dvd front.
Ebay Sales over last year .....can't say, dropped off eBay for a Year,
but from Nov. to December a 100% increase, although for the most part, sold only sealed CDS, something I usually rarely sell, but had a lot of budget Disney and Kids stuff which did the trick.
As to Amazon, the whinny buyers threw me off that site years ago, never to even want to return, although the sealed CDS at the prices I had would have been a good market....each little sticker, crack (in the case caused by the mail) drove me crazy....this year on ebay during Christmas I went from 99.1 to 99.5 rating....even with an erratic year from the post office. So while I have been a non-fan of ebays for many years, this year, it was a good holiday, hope it continues.
Happy New Year to all at PSU....from Rather Russ at www.dedicatedfool.com |

Latest update:
"Online Holiday Spending Hits $29.1 Billion"
Online holiday spending during 2009 reached $29.1 billion, representing a four percent increase over the same period last year, according to a new report from comScore.
"The 2009 online holiday shopping season was a positive one as its growth rate slightly surpassed our forecast and returned to solidly positive rates after nearly a full year of marginally negative growth," said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni.
"Among the highlights of the season was the first $900 million online spending day and a strong late season spending surge, propelled by effective retailer promotions, guaranteed shipping and a major snowstorm on the eastern seaboard that convinced many to shop from the comfort of home."

|
|
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) launched a crackdown on websites selling an array of counterfeit goods, including sports equipment, shoes, handbags, athletic apparel and sunglasses as well as illegal copies of copyrighted DVD boxed sets, music and software. The agency timed the crackdown to coincide with Cyber Monday, a popular day for online holiday shopping.
During the course of the operation, federal law enforcement agents made undercover purchases from online retailers suspected of selling counterfeit goods. In many instances, the goods were shipped directly into the United States from suppliers in other countries using international express mail.
