| not to familiar with craigslist but judging from the site it's designed for only local pickups and cash only. is that correct. what if i live in atlanta and want to market my stuff to LA residents. what would be the particulars in shipping, payments, etc. thanks. also, do they allow links to your website and if not, what is the way around it? |

Welcome thejude to PSU! I personally have used CL only for local stuff - too big to send. I know there's been some discussions in the past on what CL has been used for and what's allowed for links.
If you use the Search Forum at the top of this page, towards the left/left center, you might find some historical discussions. If not, hopefully someone with more experience can share with ya!
Glad you're here! CL is free and in my area, KC - it does get some action!! |

First of all, welcome to the PSU forums thejude!

Here's our Index for craigslist discussions.
I hope this helps a little.
I've been listing merhcanadise over there for a long time now with no sales to date. I offer shipping to anywhere within the U.S. but, no one seems interested in my stuff. |

| well I live in ohio and bought a guitar from craigslist in north carolina, had it ship with no problem.but if you list anything for a couple hundred or more you may expect to get scamming emails.I've sold a few things on it.usually list in one town,if no luck move the listing to another within the state.but also if some one googles for a certain item it will show up on the google list. |

I have sold (and bought) things on Craigslist many times.
It's really not an eBay (or other auction site) Alternative, rather an adjuct as I see it. I sell bulky things on CL that would be too costly to ship.
The back and forth with potential customers is quite time consuming - much more so than an auction site.
Then, you have to sit around waiting for someone to show up (usually late). As a female, I find the pick up part, well, worrisome. I try to arrange it for when my husband is going to be around, but it's not always possible. I never let them in the house - I open the big garage door and we transact business in the driveway.
The reason you seldom get buyers from other parts of the county is CL specifically tells everyone to not buy things from other parts of the country in every email that goes out in a big, impossible to miss yellow box :-) Without exception every time we get someone from out of the area asking about buying something - they are a scamming buyer. We just ignore those emails. Used office chair - can you ship from California to Illinois? I don't think so...
The listing format is time consuming and even if you have an account you have to upload your pictures again each week.
Even with all this, for bulky or really heavy things Craigslist is the way to go, but I would never dream of using it for all my listings.
This month on CL we sold a backpack, a bench vise, life jackets, a lawnmower, suitcase, jumbo lot of semi thrashed candles, industrial fan, plastic file boxes and more.
