A Jacksonville, Oregon man received an unpleasant surprise Saturday after a pair of bogus ads on Craigslist appeared stating his belongings were free for the taking.
The ads said that the owner of the home Robert Salisbury was forced to leave the area immediately and all his possessions, including a horse were free for anyone to take. Salisbury realized something was very wrong when he received a call from a woman who had stopped by his house to take his horse.
He rushed home to a surreal scene. "I informed them I was the owner, but they refused to give stuff back," Salisbury told The Seattle Times. "They showed me the Craigslist printout and told me they had the right to do what they did."

That just sucks.
I check out CL every day to see what they have to offer.
I have never listed on CL, but have sold to people who had postings under WANTED and have bought items you don't find at online auctions...like the old yard darts, that were banned from being sold here in the USA.
Wonder how long it takes CL to prohibit any addresses on any posting. |

| Ads like these should be reported to the police, not acted on, but of course most people are not that intelligent, and believe what they read anywhere. The looters are still stealing and will be prosecuted. What a scam! Probably done as revenge against the homeowner by some disgruntled person. |

Here is another 'sick' Craigs List Story, new in today's paper:
http://www.democratherald.com/articles/2008/03/26/news/local/5aaa02_hoax.txt
If you read the whole story you will see that the Police had trouble reaching anyone by phone at C.L.
Apparently no one is paying attention until it's too late... |

Some things about this didn't ring true.
1. Why didn't he call the cops?
2. Why didn't he jot down license plate numbers?
3. If people took the time to patiently explain that they could take his stuff due to the Craig's List ad, then why didn't he get their names and phone numbers?
4. I find it VERY hard to believe that Craig's List doesn't have a trace which will show what IP addy posted this ad.
One wonders if the man staged it himself to collect homeowner's insurance...? |

To the last responder on this- I live in Oregon and there has been a lot of media coverage, which obviously you haven't seen. The police were called by neighbors and this is being investigated as a crime. The guy didn't stage it. What you are doing is common, victimizing the victim.
The baby seller guy on CL WAS arrested by the police and was charged. Craigs list removed that posting right away. You can be sure that the state police are watching CL for copy cat postings. |

Update!
"Couple arrested in Oregon case"
Fake ads on Craigslist inviting people to take anything they wanted from an Oregon mans home were not pranks but part of a plan to cover up a burglary.
Jackson County sheriff's deputies arrested a couple in Medford, Oregon on Monday for stealing two horse saddles and other items from Robert Salisbury's home a few days before placing the bogus ads on Craigslist.
The sheriff's office tracked the origin of the Craigslist ads to a computer owned by Brandon Herbert, 29, and Amber Herbert, 28. They had been to Salisbury's home because the property was for rent but had not other connection with him. They posted the ads to try to hide their crime and sold the stolen saddles online.
Brandon and Amber Herbert were charged with burglary, theft and computer crimes.
Some of Salisbury's possessions have been returned since the crime made news, but he is still missing a significant amount of property according to the sheriff's office.
