Craigslist said today it is implementing new measures, in partnership with state law enforcement and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), to prevent its online classifieds from being used for prostitution, child exploitation, and other illegal activity.
The measures are part of an agreement between Craigslist, NCMEC, and attorneys general of more than 40 states. The move was spearheaded by Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.
"The incidence of crime on Craigslist is actually exceedingly low, considering the tens of millions of legitimate ads posted each month by well-intentioned users," said Jim Buckmaster, CEO of Craigslist.
"But no amount of criminal activity is acceptable, and as Craigslist has grown, we have become aware of instances where our free services were being misused to facilitate illegal activities."
Craigslist says because of its growth, businesses have sprung up selling software and other services designed to get around its terms of use. The company said it has filed 14 lawsuits against such businesses and is sending "cease and desist" orders to a number of companies and individuals offering such services. Craigslist said it will investigate and pass along information to local authorities of those involved in criminal activity.

| ABOUT TIME!!!!! That was practically the only thing I disliked about CL. It is a great money-maker, but the 'Morals" seemed low in that respect. I personally think many more users who were turned off by such practices will find the site much more attractive now. Good decisions always reap good rewards. :D |

 I've been listing stuff on CL for years now and never sold anything though I do like the way a seller can offer his or her items to locals.
Glad I made your day drane! :D |

Likewise. I'm pretty opened minded about things, but the sex ads on CL are too much. It is interesting to read them though. I'm always a little freaked that I'll see a pic of someone I know on there. Has that happened to anyone else? |

Koster joins effort to clean up Craigslist
NEWS-LEADER STAFF • MAY 4, 2009
Attorney General Chris Koster plans to meet with representatives of Craigslist on Tuesday in New York City to outline his concerns about advertisements for illegal erotic activities such as prostitution on Craigslist, according to a news release from his office.
Koster will begin negotiations toward an agreement with the company to eliminate ads for prostitution on the site, the release said.
Koster is representing a group of the nation’s attorneys general at the meeting, along with the attorneys general from Connecticut and Illinois.
“Craigslist is allowing advertisements for illegal activities like prostitution on its site,” Koster said in the news release. “It is blatant. It is irresponsible. It is illegal.
“Craigslist is responsible for the types of advertisements it allows, and it is imperative that Craigslist agree to tougher restrictions and to remove ads for illegal activities from its site,” Koster said in the release.
Koster said his office has been investigating the site and has found many instances where advertisements remain on the site even after being “flagged” as illegal.
“Our investigators found advertisements that clearly were offering sex-for-money or seeking a sex-for-money relationship on Craigslist’s Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbia/Jefferson City and Springfield sites,” Koster said in the release.
“These arrangements advertised are not only illegal but dangerous, and we aim to stop this type of advertising in Missouri,” he said. |

| But what are they going to do to ensure that the people who place nude images of "themselves" in the personels sections are of age? |

Thank Freakin' God - and I say this with all seriousness.
I'm in that KC market and either Dr. Phil or Oprah had a show detailing the CL portion that is 'naughty'. I had never known it existing until they made mention.
So - I went on and while not a prude can say that I was extremely shocked and very, very sad at what folks will do to make a dime.
And - there are many photos - not all appropriate - and *sigh* - I hope they clean it up quickly!!  |

I scroll thru the parts and tool categories every day. Don't scroll thru the personal ads as I have nothingt I can sell there. LOL.
I am glad to see the temptation taken away. Now the pros will be back on the street corners. It will be hard to stop but we gotta try.
On a brighter note craigs is now my # one selling site. |

Craigslist is being linked to SO many crimes out there. There have been quite a few in the past few years, linked to that website due to some of the ads.
The Girl answering a Craigslist ad on being a Babysitter found Killed.

There are more I have heard of but they have slipped my mind, and this last one they are calling THE CRAIGSLIST MURDERER (Philip Markoff). Apparently this case involved Many Sex ads answered. I wish they would just remove the sex ads section. I also hear there is a $5.00 fee for each sex ad. Craigslist is becoming the armpit of the internet. Yuckola
