Amazon has made an announcement today about Listing Collectible Books for Sale on Amazon.com as follows:

Within the next several weeks, Amazon will begin to make changes to its seller listing and upload tools enabling only approved sellers to create offers in “Collectible” condition in the Amazon.com Books store. These changes will allow Amazon.com to provide even greater detail about the Collectible books we offer for sale.

While non-approved sellers will not be able to create listings in “Collectible” condition once these changes go into effect, current Collectible listings from non-approved sellers will remain on the site for a specified period in order to allow them to relist these items as Used. For details, see the Questions and Answers section below.

In order to become an approved seller of Collectible books, sellers must meet several objective criteria. These include: the quantity of collectible and rare books available for sale on Amazon.com (and other websites), the length of time a seller has been doing business on Amazon.com, the size of a seller’s business, and the detail of the descriptions (including images) of the books listed for sale. In addition, only sellers with low order defect rates and high seller performance ratings will be considered.

Ah, so Amazon is attempting to "verify" or "assure" the quality of collectible books. Might be a wise move (especially as they seem to be considering a seller's overall inventory, and not just what's listed on Amazon). I wonder what bill thinks (IMO he should probably qualify)...

I applaud the effort to ensure customer satisfaction, but what a daunting task!!! I'm glad I'm not the one that determines condition of collectible book. That would not be an easy task to do. :o

Not sure which Bill you mean, but this Bill thinks it's one more screwup from Amazon, OR they are on the path to forcing dealers into joining ABEbooks, which they bought last year. ABE is already such a screwed up marketplace that a bunch of new Amazon sellers who are not professionals won't matter. Most of the Amazon sellers who are pros already sell at places like ABE.

Fortunately for me, Amazon is insignificant in terms of sales.

You are the Bill I meant :D

Interesting. Is it because you think Amazon won't administer the requirements properly? Or is it just a gimmick to make them look better? Do the real collectors know better than to shop Amazon anyway? And what do you think of ALibris? ;)

Why do the pros use ABEbooks if it's "screwed up". Do you think the "other sites" is a reference only to ABE? Do you mean that joining ABE is a criterion for being considered eligible to sell in the Collectible category?

I have many books on Amazon in the collectible category, most of the books are signed copies.
They already have requirements in place for listing a book in the collectible category. By making this for pre-approved vendors only, they are changing the entire system. It looks to me like they are trying to get the collectible dealers from Abe to list on Amazon. If they can do this, then they have no need for Abe anymore.
Whatever the reason they are making this change, I doubt I will be one of the chosen ones who get to list in the collectible category.

Teela - perhaps this is their attempt to consolidate all 'collectible' book sellers on the preferred technology platform. My hope is you will be selected, as (going from memory) this has been a good selling platform for you!

Please keep us posted so we know what/who/when/why and the impact!! :D :D
