Customers Are Talking: Commenters Give PayPal A Beating
By John Caddell
Recent articles about eBay's strategy shift, such as this one, underline that eBay will be trying to grow its payments business, PayPal, as auctions decline and the growth in ecommerce in general slows down.
But after reading this string of comments, in response to a fairly innocuous blog post by Fred Wilson ("Why Isn't PayPal More Successful?"), I wouldn't put a dime into a company that wants to grow this thing without overhauling its approach to business and customer service. Some snippets:
* I smell a scam every time I have to deal with them these days.
* I've had a $3000 payment held up for months as they suspect that the funds were fraudulently taken from my account. It took me a month before they would even let me prove that I indented to pay for that item on eBay. Needless to say the seller was pissed.
* I would seriously (seriously!) hit my fingers with a framing hammer before I would use Paypal again. I don't have emotional reactions to most brands. Apple? Eh. Windows? Sort of dislike it. Amazon? Sort of like it. ... Paypal? HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE.
* Also, Paypal's buyer protection is a complete joke. They claim to be able to help, but I lost all faith when I received this response from their resolution center after blatently getting ripped off by a web designer scammer: "After careful review, we have determined that the seller is at fault but regret to inform you that we were unable to recover any funds from the seller's account." How this reads to me: "You're screwed and we tried to help for 7 seconds but then didn't feel like helping anymore so we stopped."
* The biggest issue for me is...

Donawho & co. are flying by the seat of their pants. They have no idea what they are doing and I really get a kick out of them trying to put a spin on the boo boos.
I thought they really went out on a limb when JD said that PP business would double by the end of 2010. There is no foundation for that statement.
They are trying to keep their stock from tanking. JD don't like selling penny stock LOL. |

| Having been on the receiving end of a hammer while working sheetmetal (aircraft prefab) I can kind of sympathize with that one poster... (and yes, after 16 years of sheetmetal work, as scarred up as my hands are from the work, I still have all my digits.) |

but not nearly as dangerous as running your fingers into grinding belts, or using various pneumatic tools with 100psi behind it.
added ... Unless you are on the receiving end of that skillet! |

Concerning paypal in general, overall...
The paypal we know today is not the paypal we are going to know in 2011.
Then it's gonna be Federalized, and I really can see lawsuits against paypal coming like meteorites....
Imagine if your bank froze your accounts on your business, held your funds for 21 days, blacklisted your reputation, etc. etc.
Geesh Louis, it's gonna be a lot different ballgame then. |

Actually I have to admire the PayPal staff in that audio clip. They really kept to the script. No matter what the caller did in the past the facts remain that PayPal carries the risk of chargebacks from angry customers who want their money back. Even after the account is closed.
PayPal is frequently faulted when buyers file a claim and are told there is no money in the seller's account and are out of luck. They are just preserving the funds they could hold onto as a reserve against possible claims. Interest is paid and after 6 months all the funds are returned if no claims are settled.
Six months seems like a long time and it is. But no one took a gun to a seller's head to force them to sign the Users Agreement. Someday they will be forced to register as a bank but until then the seller must be aware that PayPal holds all the cards. |

Kinda makes me feel all warm & fuzzy inside...Like I'm about to blow chunks!!!
And they even pay interest (as long you are in the money market program)...whopping 0.16% last time I looked!
What credit card company allows 180 days for a chargeback?? Best I've heard is only 60...that leaves PP 4 months of holding $$ & earning interest, with NO risk whatsoever!
Be thankful for GCO & RMA!! |

| But that guy got some facts twisted... it says in that recording that "this call may be recorded for quality control." He did need to notify the other person being recorded that he was in fact recording the conversation himself when they got on the line. ... not after the fact. AND there are a couple of states that will allow recording of phone conversations as long as only 1 person need know call is being recorded. however, I kinda agree with the guy... you record me, turn about is fair. the same priviledge extends to me. |

I know a couple of local businesses that got their bank accounts frozen due to their having donated money to a charity that was later determined to be supporting Hamas.

Mine allows me to initiate a chargeback within 120 days from date of payment. |
