I have paypal on my websites with no problems. I never had a problem with them on ebay either except a few chargebacks over the years. Haven't had a chargeback in several years because i refund if i can get my item back. No problem for me as I can sell it to someone else unless it is defective.

I also have a merchant account with a virtual termnal so I can process sales over the phone. that works good too.

Now all I need is more sales LOL.

I'm pleased to say that over a ten year period using both a Merchant Account as well as PayPal we have never had a problem that was not resolved to our satisfaction with either one.

I would conclude that in many cases the problem is the buyers within your particular market rather than the payment processor itself.

I will be creating a new website soon and I was considering using Google Checkout as my payment processor. I've been told that Google fights more for you in the case of a chargeback. However, everyone should note that Google Checkout requires customers to sign up before they can even make a purchase. That was a huge deal breaker for me. Customers want quick fast payment. I guess Paypal it is.... at least for now.

Barb,

If you want Paypal's Seller Protection, then they also require that buyers register with Paypal.

In fact, you will want to require that buyers have a "confirmed" address listed with Paypal.

If a buyer makes a one time payment with Paypal using a credit card, you the seller have NO protection.

Paypal: I know for a fact ruins lives and businesses with random 6 month account freezes
Moneybookers: 40 day hold on 50%-100% of your funds unless you are an eBay Powerseller.

Paymate: Overpriced, won't work well with many carts but it's accepted on eBay. I have an account but no one ever wants to pay through them.
Google: The only problem I have had in 4 years is they suspended my account when I setup a sandbox test transaction wrong, and they thought I was trying to get a free $10 from them. They suspended the account, and had it reinstated in a few hours after I contacted them. I don't understand how anyone has any problems accepting them. I've also never had a chargeback, which I hear they can get nasty with.
Authorize.net: Never had a problem over the past year. Only 1 fraudulent customer made it past their filters which I was able to void immediately. It costs $25 total monthly, but if you do enough volume it is worth it to know the money will be in your bank account and not held up for any reason. While I've never had a chargeback through them, they also don't require any kind of "confirmed" address for chargeback protection. If you can prove delivery to the address specified by the customer, you are covered.

Yeah a new Paypal account is very vulnerable, the thing that really sets them off is anything "Get rich quick" oriented, even if it's about marketing. They have good support and fast response times, but I've seen competitors report each other to get them shut down for those kind of products. I've seen them honor the seller protection quite a few times when a product is shipped with tracking and there's a problem.

Google checkout has maybe the best fraud protection system, but make sure your products fit into their allowable products or the account can get nuked fast. Like PayPal, anything to do with making money or even how to market will set off a nerve with them.
