Looking for whitepapers, other documentation on how to successfully setup and attract buyers/sellers to an auction site.
Anyone know the percentage of auction sites that succeed and how to give myself an edge over the competition (besides low prices) ? |

First question to answer...
What is going to be unique to your website, that is not being offered by any of the other 1200 plus auction sites currently operating?
Why would a seller want to list with you, as opposed to any of the others? |

| 99.95% fail in 90 days or less. The general gist of the problem is most think that with a software package, a domain name, a few mods, and a hosting account, their in business. They do not bother to advertise, in any form, or attempt to market the site. Whatever you do, get sellers on your site -before- you attempt to advertise it. |

I agree. Its naive to think "if I build it they will come" - the "field of dreams" viewpoint.
I have contacts at a few local papers and thought about forming a parternership where I could funnel a % revenue to the paper. In return they would advertise the website - banner ads, etc.
I figure using auction software, my costs are minimal and I'm not looking to target ebay or any other specific site. I plan to use paypal and I would look like an idiot if I mention/target ebay as a competitor.
Just looking to give people a choice - hopefully enough to cover my costs.
I'm sure other sites use a subscription pay structure. I thought $15/month or $100/year or for unlimited access.
At this point, its just a twinkle in my eye. Thanks for the advice |
