It's that time of the summer when publicly-traded companies announce earnings for the second quarter of the year. eBay will tell investors today (July 22) at 5 pm Eastern how it performed during April, May and June (link).

In April, eBay reported a year-over-year first quarter decline, posting revenue of $2.02 billion. The company said the decline was caused "primarily by the impact of the stronger dollar and the decline of the core Marketplaces business in difficult macroeconomic conditions."

Overstock.com will also announce earnings today and will hold a conference call at 3 pm Eastern (link).

Amazon.com will release second quarter earnings on Thursday and will hold an investor conference call at 5 pm Eastern (link).

Quarterly earnings have never meant much to me, since sales can fluctuate greatly from one quarter to the next.

And while learning what the big sites do might be interesting, it only has any value, if you own stock in these companies.

What matters more to me, is how I'm doing at the end of the business year. After all, my income isn't based on eBay, Amazon or Overstock.

As a business narcissist I don't care about ebays or amazons bottom line, I care about mine.

Mine is currently stable and ebay sales are increasing despite decreasing traffic.

So while loosing ebay sales suddenly would cause some short term turmoil, a decline in sales on ebay over the long term would is easy to adapt to since I am already diversified off ebay.
