You wouldn't need to get your money back if you went in person to get the item and meet the seller, as Craigslist is designed to work, and you had reasonable expectations for your expenditure.

eBay bought a piece of Craigslist to get "inside information" then they launched Kijiji in the US to compete. That didn't work, so now they are trying to sue Craigslist.

Craigslist seems to work well when used as a local classified ad service, as it is designed to work, and not as an online-sales-and-shipping venue.

I have had some luck with Craigslist. I do ship now and then, usually within my state. My husband has sold some items which people picked up. We have also purchased a few things with no problems. We are in a rural area, so Craigslist is not as big here as it seems to be in more urban areas.

PS I got some great gallon glass jars for FREE on craigslist. Beautiful old amber colored jars. That was my best find so far :) I use them to store herbs in.

Well, I ended up giving up on my website after my illness started to get bad again. I ended up posting things on craigslist. This is exactly what I have sold for the last two weeks:

box of action figures including TMNT - $15
Lot of small GI joes (2 dozen) - $20
Box of PVC and Happy Meal toys - $8
Large box of plastic animals - $4
Large lot of lace and trims - $15
Old radio shack walkie Talkies - $8
Beadazzler with extras - $8
Box of Sci Fi books (60) - $15
Sculpey odds and Ends - $6
Two pounds of buttons - $4
Gallon-size bag of wired ribbon - $6
Leather Fringe Jacket - $12
Two Little Tykes kids chairs - FREE
Bag of Puffkins new with tag (20) - $10
Assorted Kids party Supplies - $6
Box of Bratz and Barbies - $13
C610 Laptop with no HD for parts - $15
Crazy lot of plastic beads (4lb) - $6

With no fees, I guess I'm doing alright on there. It takes little time but there are a few no-shows. I don't recommend using it to advertise a website or your etsy storefront because of what can happen to you if you do, but it's not bad for classified ads.

I love Craigslist.

Normally I buy and sell face to face. I buy things off there all the time, and alot of times get it cheaper then Ebay.

I sell stuff all the time.

Around here, if its a good item at a good price you have to get there fast and get it or its gone. Everyone I know uses it. I just bought things off there today.

I even bought my car on there dirt cheap and have been driving it for a long time.

Since the whole feedback thing with Ebay I started selling more of my things on there instead, and have done ok. Sometimes it might take a bit longer, but if the price is right you eventually will sell it.

Hello all! I am new to this site and am very glad to be here :) I wanted to make a suggestion about Craigslist.org. I live in New Orleans and it is CRAZY BUSY around here when I use Craigslist.org. This may sound horrible but the best part about craigslist is the "free" section under the for sale items. People give away everything from TV's to Couches and it is all FREE! I once got a 7 disc changer for free on Craigslist.org and turned around the next day and posted it on the same site! It has been a life saver since eBay started it's downslide...

I have sold handmade crafts on craigslist. I include shipping and handling in the cost of the item, and would never meet a customer or let them come to my house. I always mail them the item and refer them to where I sell my crafts. So for me, yes it has worked.

You have to be careful about pointing folks to your site from CL. There are very stiff rules about not running ads for your business there, and they even frown on ppl posting for areas they do not live in driveable distance from. I know a guy in Indy who sold electronics but used CL to try to get more sales out of his city. He was fined by them. I also know a lady banned for life for advertising her etsy store. They let you post local ads for free, but you have to pay for business ads. Just a heads up.

Craigslist has been my best alternative to eBay,
but as much as I love it, I'm really tiring of the
constant flagging and deleting of posts.

Too many users who seem to have nothing better
to do than flag posts because they personally don't
approve of your post.

Good sales on craigslist, but not exactly a solid
foundation for any online business.

Unfortunately...I havn't found an alternative that
even comes close to generating sales like CL.

Ebay owns 32% of Craigs List, there is some litigation between Ebay And CL. Living in a 2 million population city, my ads are lost in the shuffle unless I relist every day.

I have tried off and on but never get much of any interest. I tried a listing again just over a week ago. I only got 2 people interested (tomato plants at a good price)

Both wanted plants but weren't willing to come here to get them and I wasn't going to deliver. Besides the fact that I wouldn't make any money, I am too busy right now. The buyers would have gotten a good deal on odd varieties they wouldn't be able to get at their local stores.

I know it's late to make this offer, but our area had several late frosts this year and then a lot of areas flooded out, so people needed to re-plant a lot this year.

So for me CL is a big black hole -- adds go in and nothing ever comes out.

Carol

My experience has been lousy. No sales, except one guy I can probably sell some pieces to, but I spent a lot of time putting those pieces together into one unit, and I don't want to take it apart.

Now my friend who lives in the next city over has sold several bikes and a truck on there. We actually list some of each other's things - I have to keep most of it at his place anyways - and the distance is pretty negligible. So he lists on the closest CL to him and I list on the one closest to where I live. And he gets sales, and I get mostly the same idiots who send stupid notes as on eBay. Or no response at all. The category has enough turnover to amount to about one page's worth per day, haven't checked for his.

The only real difference is he posts his without pictures and has me email the pictures to people; I post mine with pictures, some self hosted, some on CL's hosting.

So it beats me what's going on.

Had MY FIRST SALE today :!:
Just helped the lady put the exercise equipment
into the car (dang it's cold out there!!).

That was nice.
It went smoothly and didn't take long for someone
to find my ad either.
Posted Wednesday got paid Thursday.

I was a little nervous because this was my first time
using CL and having someone comming over my
house for an item.
But overall it was not bad...

I think I'll use it again!! lol
