eBay is making it easier for sellers to specify which countries they will not ship to. Since last year, eBay sellers have been able to specify countries to which they don't ship by gong into their accounts in My eBay and updating Buyer Requirements. Prior to that, sellers who allowed shipping to the UK but not to Italy, for example, were unable to make that distinction since eBay settings were by region, not country-specific. (Italy's postal system is notoriously disliked by many online sellers.)

This in my opinion was one of the best things ebay did this past year... The absolute best thing. ok, it was the only good thing they did... :-)

I get emails daily asking why i don't ship to various countries, Estonia today..

my favorite was one to Iran (a delcampe order) the buyer begged me to ship there. I reluctantly agreed stating it would be at his risk 100%, he agreed. He then paid with an Austria paypal account with another name. I shipped carefully. He then writes me a rude nasty letter asking why i shipped an empty package to him. I told him to contact the iranian police and ask them where his items were at. since the sale he has contacted me over 5 times with nasty emails. moral to the story.. customers will not accept a loss if item is stolen even if they say so.. or liars are also theives? - insurance is nice but good DSRs are nice too, best to avoid the bad countries.

Italy's postal system is notoriously disliked by many online sellers, primarily due to the sellers not having read Italy's list of banned and restrictive items.

If they had, they'd learn that Italy has just about the longest list of banned items imaginable.

Therefore, the item they shipped to Italy, was probably confiscated by customs and since they, the seller, didn't specify that they would pay retrun postage, the item was destroyed.

Having said all that, I think eBay's announcement is a good idea. Just be sure to check whether this will be one of the FREE apps or if it's only free for the first 30 days, after which you have to pay a subscription fee.

Just in case, you might want to learn how to do the same thing, in your seller preferences.

I do like Italy Postal System...never a problem one.. you really need to keep in mind many items are prohibited from entering Italy...sellers do not read the prohibitions and restrictions list and wind up getting their items confiscated by Italian Customs and blame the country as a whole

Ditto, but I also ship to our neighbors in Canada. But that is it.

That's too bad. Considering the weakness of the US dollar, our goods are cheap to the Europeans right now, and they aren't as picky about paying for shipping.

I had CDs that might have fetched $20 here go for more than 4 times that amount in Europe.

Levi's are hot big time in Europe. I know one seller in the Netherlands that makes a buying trip to the US every few months just to restock Levi's to sell to European buyers at 4-5 times what he pays for them.

@Lizard

As far as restricting sales to N. America.
Doesn't matter. As you know by now, I am through selling. grrrrrr.....
I am just not cut out for ecommerce. I'm not money hungry enough. I have all kinds of websites. Some with great traffic, and they are all completely non-monetised. You won't see a Google link in site, nor do I accept financial contributions for site maintenance. I even give away free hosting to sites I deem worthy. Usually involving free-speech. And yes I acknowledge there are theoretical limits to such. I wouldn't, for instance, host a Nazi, porn, or progressive liberal site. I am after all, a nice Lutheran boy. . What no emoticon with a halo?
