There certainly wasn’t any letdown in sales and profits for Amazon.com in the first quarter.
For the first quarter ended March 31, Amazon, No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, today reported:
Net sales were $7.13 billion, a 45.8% increase from $4.89 billion in Q1 2009.
North American net sales totaled $3.78 billion, up 47.1% from $2.57 billion in Q1 2009. North America accounted for about 53.0% of sales in Q1.
International net sales totaled $3.35 billion, up 45.0% from $2.31 billion in Q1 2009. International accounted for about 47.0% of sales in Q1.
Operating income grew year over year 61.5% to $394.0 million from $244.0 million.
Net income grew year over year 68.9% to $299.0 million from $177.0 million in Q1 2009.
Spending on marketing increased 57.0% to $201 million from $128 million in Q1 2009. Marketing expenses accounted for 2.8% of net sales.
Spending on technology and content increased 33.1% to $366.0 million from $275.0 million in Q1 2009. Technology expenses accounted for 5.1% of net sales.
Spending on fulfillment increased 29.4% to $546.0 million from $422.0 million in Q1 2009. Fulfillment expenses accounted for 7.7% of net sales.
General and administrative spending rose to $97.0 million from $68.0 million in the first quarter of 2009, an increase of 42.6%. General and administrative spending accounted for 1.4% of net sales.
