Amazon.com is taking aim at the college crowd. The e-commerce giant is offering students free Amazon Prime membership for a year (normally $79), giving them free, two-day shipping on products, as well as various promotions and discounts. You have to be enrolled in a college or university, have a valid .edu e-mail address and provide your major to take part in the program.
Presumably Amazon is betting that students, once addicted to Prime, won't be able to give it up when the free year expires, and fork over the $79 to continue.
The Amazon Student page sells used textbooks, laptops, backpacks and other dorm staples. It also touts free Kindle electronic book apps for iPad and other devices, but not the Kindle reader itself, which has gotten mixed reviews in university pilot projects.
