Erick Schonfeld[/b]

eBay is having second thoughts about how easy it will be to spread the Kijiji brand in the U.S. The company is testing out the name "eBay Classifieds" in two cities, San Antonio and Pittsburgh. A letter sent out to Kijiji members states:

We here at Kijiji thought it made a lot of sense to start using the eBay brand name. After all, we are part of the eBay family and we are a classifieds site... so eBay Classifieds just seemed like a good idea.

Maybe it also has something to do with the "j"s and "i"s blending together beyond recognition in "Kijiji." It's not just the name that needs work. The number of visitors to Kijiji sites worldwide was up only 7 percent in January to 23.2 million, while Craigslist grew six times faster and...

Hate to say it but everything ebay tries does not turn into gold.

Where I live, many pets found for sale on Kijiji come from someone who paid little or got the pet for free on CL, with a lot bigger price tag.

This is definitely one of the reasons that ebay bought into CL to begin with. They needed to know how this whole online classified ad site worked...and they still can't get it right.

I check CL daily....hardly venture over to Kijiji.

Most companies become successful with one idea or product. When they stray into unknown territory it seldom works. Ebay is good at online auctions.

Craig has a lock on the local selling and isn't letting go. That is all they do. A model of success in hard times.

Unless you are the only one with a truly unique internet product success will be limited or non-existent. Its the same problem across board, too much competition and a venue with extremely low entry costs means every one plus their brother will be doing it. Just like eBay and Amazon with the number of sellers greatly out weighing the number of buyers.

I just checked out craigslist, the majority of the ads are for men looking for tops and bottoms, I must be getting old because when I was a kid it was called something else. That is a BS site that should be shut down, that is possibly why it is so popular. If they want eBay classifieds to take off they will more than likely have to open up categories for that group.

I'm also "old" and I don't know what ads you are looking at, but I get a lot of opportunities regarding my art there. My daughter had furnished her house for practically nil as had a friend of mine. I guess its the ads you are looking at. There are many things for sale (and not tops/bottoms as you put it), job opportunities, and many more. I love CL and ususally recommend it to all my friends that want to sell their stuff but not get into the different sites. Like an online yard sale.

No no, stay out of "gigs" and "personals"! Or personal gigs, unless you consider being spanked a job opportunity.

Fatseal...I'm laughing my head off right now, but I need to get back on track. lol I have used kijiji for a long time to get added exposure for my stores. All I can say is it works! I don't know how long ebay has had their grubby little fingers into the site, but it has changed over the past few months and is not getting the traffic is was getting several months ago. I sold 20 items from my listings there in November, not to bad for a class site. I listed about 50 items there 3 weeks ago and haven't had one response yet. I figured with the exposure ebay was giving it, that I might see a huge increase in interest...ugh I was wrong.

Related article:

"eBay to retire the Kijiji brand?"

While Gumtree is the top classifieds site in the UK it appears that Kijiji is far from achieving the same penetration in the US. eBay are now trialling a name change to “eBay Classifieds” in two US cities - San Antonio TX and Pittsburgh PA.

The change will take place early in March, and eBay have written to users of Kijiji saying “We thought it made a lot of sense to start using the eBay brand name“.

Craigslist (who eBay have a stake in are are suing and being sued by) is of course the undisputed king of US online classifieds.

Neither Kijiji (Swahili for village) nor Gumtree is particularly descriptive, and Kijiji isn’t easy to spell (trust me, I had to look it up to check) so the name change is interesting but not desperately surprising. The decision to draw on the eBay brand is however a change worth noting.

Up until now although in the UK Gumtree reside in the UK eBay office the two businesses don’t mix, in fact classifieds have always been viewed as the black sheep of the eBay family. That’s not surprising, users selling products with no listing fees, no final value fees and very few irrelevant 3rd party adverts must be an anathema to eBay management.

The ebay classifieds used to be known as Kijiji classifieds owned by ebay. Kijiji was ebays craigslist since ebay wasn't able to take over craigslist.

I don't know when Kijiji first started though.

Ebay has a new classifieds dept. on their website. It is free and very similar to Craigslist. Why would they add a free classifieds section? Who would list an item on their website and have to pay fees when you can list on their classified section for free? Aren't they shooting themselves in the foot?

Doesn't make much sense to me.

Anyone use it and have any luck?

Well here are a couple things eBay owns a 24% share of craigslist, and they are less than friendly partners. eBay also owns Paypal, so an easy transfer from Classified to Paypal is accomplished and they make money on the Paypal end. Also they are gathering information about buyers and sellers and marketing that way as well.

It actually has been around for awhile. It used to be called Kijiji.com.

Since they changed over to ebay classifieds they have gotten more intrusive to what you list too. Your ad cannot have the word replica in it, you cannot sell certain items - almost as bad as their auction site rules.

And they will even move your classified to the services and merchants section instead of the for sale section if they decide that you are not someone selling your own items out of your home but you are a professional seller so you have to be careful how you word your listings. I don't know what reason they decide you are a professional, maybe if you list too much?

I haven't had much luck there but it could be my area.

Everyone I know this has the E-Bay name but this is as far right of E-Bay as possible E-Bay classified was hatch from Kijiji in March of this year

1. Free to list, No Final Value or Closing Fees
2 Very easy to list much like Craiglist
3. Family and Children friendly site read the blogs very helpful
4. Site allows you to pace yourself can only list 25 items a day
5. Great customer service
6 Items can be viewed on Google and Bing within a day

That's all I'm going to say if you haven't tried it your missing out on a good thing
