On Friday, I mentioned an oddity on Amazon that I thought was weird: I could not complete the buying process until I agreed to sign up for Amazon Prime. (I did, then called and canceled). So far, it appears to have been a one time glitch.
The latest online idiocy I encountered involved eBay. Truth be told, I really like Amazon, but — I was never much of a fan of Bay’s auction site. I especially detest their miserable payment process Paypal. This is a bank pretending to be an online service, but they are not kidding anyone — Paypal is a bank, and they absolutely should be regulated like one.
Where was I? Ahh, the latest idiocy: I occasionally bid on expensive items but at prices below fair value. Unlike high frequency traders, I stand ready to buy the item at my bid prices.

Nothing new here, eBay has had this in place for years.
You can request another member’s contact information if you are involved in a current or recent transaction with them.
Contact information will be emailed to you, and the member whose information you requested will receive your information as well. Information can only be used in accordance with eBay’s Privacy Policy.” |

This buyer is absurd, and this is not a privacy issue at all.
As soon as he bid on this item (a very expensive car, btw), he was in effect entering into a contract with the seller. Of course the seller can have access to his personal information - it has always been this way.
Did the seller use the information inappropriately? Yes - and the seller can be suspended for doing so.
Was the buyer's info made public by ebay? Nope. The info was only made available to the seller - and the buyer agreed to this when they signed up on ebay. |

If somebody call me for an auction I will not even loose my time hearing what he need to said unless if that info is about the way to pick-up the car.
Weeks ago a "possible" buyer in eBay send me a message and added his phone number. He said that he lives here in PR and want to contact me. I send him two messages without an answer from him, but until he doesn't answer my messages and explain what he is interesting. I will not call. |
