PayPal's mobile app now allows users to transfer checks into their PayPal balance by simply photographing the checks with their iPhone using a service from BankServ called Mobile Check Capture. PayPal won't charge users extra fees for using the service. But don't expect to use it for eBay transactions - eBay moved to an electronic-only payment platform two years ago.
Banks have already begun adopting the technology, called Mobile Remote Deposit Capture (Mobile RDC). In August, FiServ launched a similar service for camera-equipped smartphones, called Mobile Source Capture, for depositing checks into bank accounts.
According to a research study by Mercatus LLC in December 2009, close to two thirds (59%) of current mobile banking customers said they were likely to adopt mobile remote deposit capture if the technology was offered by their banks.
