Police are warning online shoppers to be careful, after a rash of transactions have duped people into accepting counterfeit currency.

The RCMP’s Pacific Region commercial crime section said this week that 70 Craigslist transactions have been reported to Lower Mainland police since June 25.

Some criminals have been using Craigslist, the popular Internet classified advertisement network, to pass counterfeit currency, and the RCMP has been tracking the transactions to identify trends.

Sgt. Tony Farahbakhchian, the RCMP’s Pacific Region counterfeit co-ordinator, said the information is also used to looking to criminal organizations and individuals involved in making counterfeit money.

In the meantime, however, those buying and selling items online should be careful, he warned.

“If you are meeting someone you don’t know, there are a few simply steps you should take to ensure your own safety,” he said in a release.

In the majority of the cases, he said, the buyer is meeting the victim in isolated areas such as secluded parks, quiet street corners or parking lots. The transactions are done hastily where minimal contact information is provided by the suspect.
