Trying to buy a cell phone through Craigslist, 19-year-old Johnathan Clements paid with his life.
Clements, of Hazel Park, posted ad in the ‘wanted’ section of Craigslist, according to the Hazel Park Police. Then, when he got a call at 2 p.m. Tuesday from a man who said he was from Southfield, the teen arranged to meet the seller at his home.
He was supposed to buy the phone for $95 at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Hazel Park Police Lt. Michael Kolp said. Clements invited the seller to come to his home in the 23066 block of Crossley, where he lived with his aunt and two young cousins, ages 6 and 12.
Police believe the man, who said he was from Southfield was setting up Clements, intent on robbing the teen who grew up in northern Macomb County, Hazel Park Police Lt. Michael Kolp said. He showed up at the house at about 7:30 p.m., telling Clements he got lost on the way.
“He was talking to him on the phone as he was walking out the door,” family friend Renee Norman said today, standing on the front porch, steps from where Clements died.
