Hi!
I just came across this site and thought I'd say hi!
:)
I guess like everyone else on here, I have had plenty of dealings with eBay over the last 12 years or so and actually gave up selling on there quite some time ago. Their increasing fees, poor customer service, a lack of a decent feedback system (not to mention forcing sellers to offer PAYPAL!) and finding that many auction items sold for less than what I wanted meant that I had to look for alternatives.
Sadly, given eBay's enormous market presence, the other auction sites around the place really didn't do much for me. I think it was a case of people not buying/bidding on those other sites as there wasn't as much choice compared to eBay.
I run an Australian military book and military history business, and after much research decided to setup my own online store as an alternative to eBay (check out Regimental Books - Australian Military Books and Military History).
It certainly was an eye opening experience (and really different to your traditional bricks and mortar shop) but ultimately extremely rewarding with many more sales than what we got via eBay and also good rankings in Google thanks to a concerted Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) effort and not to mention as a retailer I was able to get higher prices than what I could via eBay and without having to pay hefty listing and final valuation fees.
And not to mention that it was a reasonable inexpensive effort to set things up! I probably would have paid more in eBay fees then what it cost me to setup my own online store!
Now 95% of our sales are online and every sale, either big or small still brings a smile to me face. :)
I also love the whole E-Commerce/online retail industry that I have now also started to offer my services as a consultant to help other people (and small businesses) do the same thing - set up an online store, drive traffic to it and profit via online sales. It's really cool seeing how many people are seeing an opportunity to get online to sell as an alternative to eBay (and really, it's not that hard or that expensive) and in Australia online retailer is certainly starting to have an impact (to the point where one of the Billionaire business chain owners had a huge whinge to the media about it!).
If anyone has any questions, please ask - I'm happy to assist or if you would like to me to setup something for you (online store, SEO etc) then feel free to message me - my rates are very reasonable. :)
Happy online selling!
