RENO, NV - A local man is thinking twice about buying anything on Craigslist after a strong-arm robbery over the weekend. Reno police say the man answered an ad on the website for a laptop computer. It could have cost him his life.
“That's where they started 'The Craigslist Killer.' I mean, it’s scary out there and everything,” says Kim Grist from Reno Rental Finders.
It’s her reaction to the strong-arm robbery of a man who responded to an ad on Craigslist.
Grist uses Craigslist services a lot.
According to police, the man was told by the seller to meet in the 4700 block of North Virginia Street, at which point he was threatened and his money taken. The suspects were later seen in the area of Montello and Sutro.
Grist says when she sells something on Craigslist, she makes sure the person meets her at the office, there is someone with her, and it’s during the daylight hours.
If there's something she wants to buy, she goes by another set of rules.
Referring to possible fraudulent ads, “Where it says send me some money, my friend has the keys send me some money, he'll drop off the car. Whatever it is, you can always tell these by there is no phone number, there is an email address some strange email address and then they want all sorts of information and they want you to send them money first,” says Grist, referring to red flags.
“There is an inherent risk associated with this because you are dealing with strangers,” says Reno Police Lt. Mohammad Rafaqat.
And even in the electronic age, it’s still dangerous to take candy, computers, or anything else from strangers.
