If I were to start an auction/fixed price sie now, what payment services would you want included? Both for the buyer/seller transactions and site fees?

If refering to a public online auction site?
Personally I would not waste my time creating, marketing and constantly upgrading a new online auction site, now or probably ever. Too many demands from sellers, too expensive to upkeep properly and little or no profit. The browsers and members here have seen hundreds if not thhousands of these overnight pop up sites come and go.
Though out of date, check kenzy.com and check out the hundreds of "defunct online auction sites".

The majority of online sellers expect these small alternative sites to be free forcing the owners to lure other companies to spend funds on advertising which clutter the front page with banners and pop-up ads.

Sellers also expect huge amounts of traffic which again, cost the owner money spent out of their own pocket.

IMHO, unless a person or company has millions to spend on marketing nationwide, a great tech staff and a long-term program, why waste the time with all of the headaches.

I am planning a site but I am going to confine the scope to people in my own niche, handmade medieval items. Right now, I can go to 15 message boards, of which I have been a member for over 13 years average and just post that my site exists and that will inform over 60,000 unique users. I am less worried about traffic, becuse I recently took a survey on the message sites, and on average, ebays users in my communities are getting a whole 25 item views on a 7 day listing, hence, my crowd is paying 13% for no traffic via ebay, I think I can do better. The flood of poor quality, unsafe far east knockoffs in my ebay category have offically made ebay useless to us. Yesterday, the largest business in out sphere failed and closed. I plan no insertion fee, and 5% FVF excluding shipping, I will keep you all informed on how it goes. I have been on ebay for about 12 years now, my buyers won't go there under any circumstances anymore.

So, if you could please give me some guidance to my question, I really do not want to open up on Nov 1 with just Paypal.

I'm now weary of Moneybookers due to the fact my CC company sent me a warning via telephone today alerting me to an unapproved purchase of over $140 from a moneybookers user using MY CC #.
Needless to say I've canceled the CC and my MB accounts!

Paypal

Amazon Payments/Checkout By Amazon

Google Checkout

Nothing comes close to the value of accepting those 3.

For auction sites I use of course paypal, although I wish there was a better option.

For my own site I have my own credit card processing, via Moneris, which is the largest CC processor in Canada, very happy with them.

Google Checkout, Serve and Moneybookers

Google checkout has chargebacks - No way!

Serve was once called revolutionarymoneyexchange (no chargebacks), now they are owned by American Express. no there is chargebacks and they can hold your money - better read their new user agreement.

Moneybookers was also originally a no chargeback service, but in order to be accepted on eBay they sold their users out to PayPal and had to offer chargeback.

Only service with no chargeback is ING Direct Person to Person - its free. ING Direct is the Dutch internet banking giant that actually performs all of paypal's overseas money transfers.

First one is PayPal. This is the most popular payment service in the world. This is the primary way to send and receive money for people. It give facility of credit cards, debit cards and also echeck.

Second one is Google checkout. This give facility of credit cards and debit cards but not give the facility of echeck. This is little bit less popular than PayPal.

Third one is Xoom. It is reliable and some people use this payment service.

Fourth one is Moneybookers. This service is used by many people in the world from last few years.

MyCheckFree is also one of the popular payment systems. This allows you to receive your bill on your email and you can pay to your affiliate stores.

Paytrust is also a most comprehensive online billing system to pay your bill.

CCNow is shopping cart electronic payment system that accepts all major credit cards.
