EBay, the San Jose virtual auction house renowned for connecting buyers and sellers, announced a new effort Wednesday to connect merchants and the developers who can bring them online.
X.commerce, a suite of e-commerce services comprising several recent eBay acquisitions, launched during eBay's developer conference at Moscone Center. The X.commerce platform lets developers build services like virtual shopping carts, payment services, inventory control and tax management.
"We are at the center of a fundamental shift," said Naveed Anwar, head of community for X.commerce. "In the past, eBay used to be about connecting buyers and sellers. EBay is now focusing on commerce."
Anwar said the rise of social networks and location-aware smart phones had caused retailing to change more in the past three years than it had in the previous 15. But as customers have gained new ways to shop, most offline retailers have lacked the technical skills to reach them.
EBay's hope is that developers will turn to X.commerce to work with small and medium-size businesses that need technical assistance in bringing their products online. The company also makes a product for larger businesses.
