List a 40lb tool .. make shipping: 'First Class Mail' ..like $15. Run your auction.
When the tool, that sold new for $500 (easy to find because others are listed BIN at that price), sells for $100.. Simply send a note saying, "I cannot sell it for that price because it will cost $120 to ship it."
If the buyer balks at the increase - refund the buyer's paypal very quickly. The quick refund kills the opportunity for the buyer to open a case. When pressed, Ebay responds; "You got your money back?!" ..and the seller marches on without the sanctions that someone who did not pay would get.
You can have Sellers Remorse - you simply need to plan for it.

| But then the buyer will leave you negative feedback and low DSRs and eventually you will lose your account, not to mention that future buyers will read the negative feedback comments and not bid on your items |

....Sanibel; "You would think." ..and, you are correct.
When you go into My Ebay/Summary/Purchases .. you will see all items. In this case I can see a picture of the item .. the closing bid .. my high bid, etc.. etc. BUT, off to the right where you usually see this:
View order details
Leave feedback
More actions
...it is replaced with this.
View PayPal transaction
View seller's other items
More actions
I made the mistake of not clicking on 'More actions' ... when that opens, there is a spot to "Leave feedback". I stand corrected.
I guess I am still pist'd that Ebay will lean all over a buyer who has remorse .. but not a seller. Thanks for prompting me to look deeper.

No problem, I thought for a minute you might be on to something but from what I have read the buyer can give you feedback no matter what.
I haven't purchased anything off of ebay for years so I don't know what the 'items purchased' page would look like or how giving feedback nowadays is. I just use them to drive buyers to my store after the sale :) |

| If your ultimate goal is to sell your item, why don't you simply list the item and shipping cost honestly? I don't see what you have to gain from this. |

| Yeah, it's too bad ebay can't treat their customers honestly since it is their ultimate goal is to make money off of sales |

| It seems that the OP has gone through a lot of trouble to intentionally not make a sale. Am I missing something? |

Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with being dishonest in making a sale at all and I always sell my items for the price that was bid, which is why I do not start listings at 99 cents.
I go out of my way to give my buyers stellar customer service and would never do anything crooked.
However, the original op made me wonder if there was a way to cancel a sale after the auction was over due to a bad buyer that slipped in at the last moment to snipe an auction and then you see the feedback he leaves is all negatives or in a case that just happened to me - had a plate listed, a potential buyer messages me and asks some questions on the conditions of the plate, I immediately answer with a thorough explanation. Buyer bids on plate and wins - great right?
After payment, buyer adds a note in the note section telling me my shipping is too high and I need to come down on my shipping and send them a partial refund. The buyer did this deliberately, at no time did they question the shipping before they bid and if they did not agree with the shipping then they should not have bid.
I am seeing situations like this more and more.
Now not only do I have to send them a partial refund on shipping to make them happy and hope that they don't ding me on those stupid dsrs or give me negative or neutral feedback and end up losing money on shipping since it will cost me more to ship the plate than what the buyer will pay but when I give them the refund I will not be able to recoup that percentage that ebay took out on the original sale so I lose two ways.
It would be really nice to be able to cancel a sale after it is over when you run across unscrupulous buyers without having to open yourself up to negative feedback and low dsrs and ebay won't do anything to back you up even though you are their customers. |

Ah, I understand now. This was an example of how to cancel a sale after an auction has ended. I misunderstood the posting when I first read it.
Buyers like that used to drive me insane. I have since changed all of my listings to BIN with immediate payment required, and I roll the shipping cost into the item price and then offer free shipping. This completely ended all problems with non-paying buyers and negotiations on combined shipping. There are always a few stinkers, but much less of them now. |

| I don't know if that was what the original poster was getting at but I saw the title and thought maybe someone found a way to cancel a sale without the backlash and I was really, really interested :) |

Of course buyers can always just opt to not pay you- and nothing happens to them- You are then forced to file a non-payment dispute- this CAN save you from having them leave you a negative. Just don't EVER end a transaction yourself- if you do this- they can NOT pay you and are STILL permitted to leave YOU a negative.
My buyer made a bid on my item- and then emailed me, saying she was in a hurry to get the item and would I please end the auction for her right then. I did as she requested- and THEN she wrote and said "I changed my mind. I don't want it anymore". ????
So...I told her to end the transaction. She did nothing- so I applied to end it, and she never responded, and never paid. SHE now has the right to leave ME a negative feedback- I'm just waiting for it. |

That's exactly what ebay wants it's sellers to do. Be more like amazon!Lure potential buyers AWAY from auctions (the old-fashioned way) and purchase via BIN.
Are the old-fashioned auctions dead? YEP! It's all about the quick buy and free shipping.... |

| My sales are about half and half- Half auctions and half fixed price. Doesn't really make that much difference. Ebay encourages Auction-style listings by offering a lot of promotions- reduced rates- to list Auction-style- Normally they seldom get 'bids' but will sell on the day they are ending. Betty Lou |

I don't understand...I have an option on how to list my items, and I choose BIN because it's right for my business. This is somehow proof that there is evil afoot? |
