Anytime you go back and look at history and assess a dumb decision, you open yourself up to criticism that “hindsight is 20/20.” That’s true. But it’s still helpful to assess these choices and hopefully learn a little bit from them.
For me, the dumbest tech decision of the last decade sticks out clearly. Yet, I can’t honestly say that I wouldn’t have also made the same stupid choice.
Ladies and gentleman, the most ridiculous tech decision in the last 10 years was when PayPal agreed to be acquired by eBay (EBAY) for $1.5 billion in July 2002.
PayPal had gone public earlier in 2002 at a $1.2 billion valuation, despite having a revenue run rate at the time they were bought of $160 million and losses of $80 million.

I like the answer #4 for the "Why?" questions. It is true non of that 2 companies in 10 year made nothing new. I remember read some months something about that one card company wants to face Paypal, but no more comments.
The fact is that PayPal grew because it becomes the default payment method of a marketplace. After its popularity the rest of the selling sites added it. |

Right now the only method that can give you a great potential to become the next Paypal. If the payment method become default in the e-Commerce sites or Gaming Business, gain popularity (easy to use), and expand everywhere (support for every buyer/seller/site in the world).
I was reading news about "V.me", but it looks line another Google Checkout. Everybody calling it "competence/alternative to PP", but not fees and support details about it. |
