eBay CEO John Donahoe told the Wall Street Journal it had a "record" Black Friday but provided no further information. eBay did share its mobile growth rates for Thursday and Friday, some data about which products and categories consumers were shopping, and somewhat interesting data about its Black Friday deals:

"Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18-55mm IS II Kit Digital SLR Camera for $649.99. All units sold out in less than five hours. More than 100 units sold per hour."

"HP 3105m Laptop for $199.99. All units sold out in just over three hours. Nearly three units sold per minute."

Just like Paypal that said it did five times as much as last year on mobile.

If they did 10 sales last year that means they did 50 this year!

Why don't they give proper figures ?
percentages on their own mean nothing!

Amazon and Etsy and Alsoshop seem the only paces that are not afraid to give out meaningful figures.

Hello, my business partner and I are eBay PowerSellers who are creating a new mobile application to assist users in selling items 'easier' on eBay. We're doing market research and have two questions:

Do you have an iPhone or Android?

Do you use mobile apps?

Also, what is your age?

Thank you,

Amanda

Everyone in my family has an android phone (4 total), we all use apps, including ebay (and the new etsy app).

Far as mobile sales growth for paypal:

2009 - $141 Million
2010 - $1.5 Billion
2011 - $3-4 Billion (projected)

Last year's Cyber-Monday mobile sales were around 4 million (for that one day), so we're probably talking 15-20 million done on mobile yesterday (paypal announced about a 500+% jump from last year).

LOL, I've seen some of these auctions uploaded with mobile phone picture. These people should not be on ebay as they don't provide quality photos for their customers. A mobile can come no where near my Canon - and thats what you need to post collectibles and antiques whereas the wear and defects determine the price. Of course I guess it beats the sellers posting in computer parts - they simply lift a photo from the manufacturer's site for their used part and post that - so where's ebay coming down on them for this?

"Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18-55mm IS II Kit Digital SLR Camera for $649.99. All units sold out in less than five hours. More than 100 units sold per hour."

Ah there are a lot of uniformed people. I bought my Canon I got a free $400.00+ printer which I then sold on eBay to pay for more camera items. Plus I got other free items because I bought it from a place that does not sell on eBay, thus they have less overhead.

"HP 3105m Laptop for $199.99. All units sold out in just over three hours. Nearly three units sold per minute."

LOL, the last auction I was at they got $110.00 for a used HP laptop several years old. The auctioneer was goading the people along saying why pay $300.00 at Best Buy. The price was stalled for awhile because they did not know if it came with the power cord, but they were saying this would be no problem because you could get one at Best Buy for $10.00. Then the power cord was found and it went in price. LOL, all the while I was trying to stop from laughing because the people bidding never realized that the power cord did not really matter - it was the battery that mattered. They could easily spend more than $100.00 to replace the battery, if its still made. This auctioneer and eBay pray on people who do not know better.

It will be interesting to see how Apple will roll out its payment system further - I'd like to see PayPal get kicked in the crotch by Apple.

Update:

"eBay expects its mobile sales to increase 60% this year"

Online marketplace eBay Inc. has long been a major player in mobile commerce with more than a dozen apps and an m-commerce site to boot. Those efforts have proven worthwhile, as the value of goods sold on eBay via mobile devices passed $5 billion last year.

Yet, eBay CEO John Donahoe said at the International Consumer Electronics Show this week in Las Vegas that there’s plenty more room for eBay to grow in mobile sales. EBay projects it will surpass $8 billion in gross merchandise sales worldwide this year, a 60% increase from a year ago, he said.

Meanwhile, eBay expects mobile payment volume worldwide for its PayPal payment service to reach $7 billion this year, a 75% jump from $4 billion in 2011, he said. That’s a marked increase from PayPal’s original 2011 forecast that projected PayPal payment volume of $1.5 billion, which would have been double its $750 million volume in 2010, according to David Marcus, vice president of PayPal Mobile in a blog post.

Good to see that at last ebay are giving some actual figures rather than just percentage increase which mean nothing (especially from a small starting base)
