Hi everyone,

Currently i'm building an ebay/craigslist alternative website where sellers can choose to sell globally or just locally but via videos. They will use video to showcase their products which i believe will be the future of online trading. I am looking for marketing strategies to increase traffic and seeking more sellers to transform the way people buy/sell online via videos instead of just plain photos. How would you solve the chicken and egg problem? What would be the best way to search and acquire these ecommerce sellers to list their products on a new website? How would you start to market a website like ebay, craigslist, ioffer, etsy etc.

Hope you guys can give me some advice. Thanks

Here is the website in beta mode.

trying to make something like e bay is just spinning your wheels the best thing when building a site is to keep it simple and secure for both user and seller have selected categories and sub categories for selling items and some type of performance monitoring system for the buyers to view if a seller wants to use a video to sell their item that will be a big band with issue on a site dependant on the size of the host server.
I believe that shoppers won't spend the time to download a video of an item they want to buy because of the time spent waiting for it.
And most shopping that is done is researched for best price and then purchased it is just all about the money unless you have something unique or rare, everyday items are shopped by price if you buy it from someone in NY and your in CAL. and it is the best price you can find including shipping that seller will get the sale.
sellers item description plays a big part for any sites success and the number one thing is to advertise that site how can you compete with e bay on that ?? you can't unless you have millions to use for advertising that is why e bay charges what it does and is # ! there is a slew of sites out there and they all make something but trying to compete against the 1000 pound gorilla that e bay is won't happen unless several site owners band to gether and have millions to build something of that caliber that is how the next best in e commerce thing will happen small sites will be what they are small ebay does a lot to keep on top a small site isn't capable of doing.
Good luck with your endevor

Seriously! Another eBay Alternative. :roll:

No offense, but we see a minimum of one every week here in the forum. And as far I remember from the new ones only 2 are alive after 2 years and 1 manage to grow.

The videos are good idea, but for many sellers it is just lost time that will need to spend in a video unless someone is selling a car, house or a big value collectible treasure. As a buyer I will no see a video for an item like a book or any item in a sealed box.

About the fees. I'm very confuse. Is 2% final fee or is 2%+ (2.9%+ 30cents)?

I agree with thegolfingdolphin, get sellers can be easy, but getting buyers isn't easy. One of the big reason that some of the "Alternatives" never work. Also lets no forget that they want free promo from the sellers even when they ask for a fee.

@TimJones
Your best plan would be to find 10 millionaires to invest with you.
Otherwise forget it.
If you need to come on here to get marketing ideas, then You obviously don't know how online selling works.
As others have said a new site starts up very few weeks.
We (the sellers) need LESS sites perhaps only 4 or 5 with lots of buyers not hundreds with only 2 buyers each.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'm really not trying to compete with ebay/craiglist. What i'm trying to do is help buyers buy products with more confidence by having the seller showcase videos instead of photos. My real niches are cars, funitures, clothes/accessories and used electronics to better see the conditions. Our videos are uploaded with youtube straight to our channels which save us alot of bandwidth and money. We plan to invest a great amount of time in SEO to draw buyers to our site and help sellers market products via our social media.

To answer some of the questions,

Buyers do not have to register to buy a product that is for sale locally.

Our fees are very low. 2%+paypal fees. We charge 2% because it is our break even point. For those who wants to sell locally just like craigslist we do not charge a fee. They can list as many ads for free.

We plan to provide sellers with their own video shop which have many features where buyers will have auto notifications whenever a seller listed a new product. Like "Follow my shop". There will be many more features along with this.

At the end I totally agree with you guys that some products do not need to be showcased with video because of time consuming but there are also products i believe video can provide buyers with more confidence and helps sellers increase their trust and reputations.

Oh well I hope that if you get some listings that PSU put you on their chart and even start a thread for you.

Because there are many other sites that don't get a look in.

timjones, if you fees are only 2%. My recommendation is focus in your fees and forget that Paypal part because it is confusing.

@Timjones
My suggestion is to charge 5% fees.
Make joinging free.
Enforce a rule that sellers visit your site once a week.
People don't mind paying fair fees If they sell their items.
You need cashflow to be able to work on your site and advertise it.
Others such as ebid.net and ecrater and bonanza that charge low fvf's don't have the cashflow are not able to grow.

I don't know about videos. I have dsl and still don't like to view videos due to the long long time it takes for them to load and start up. I can just imagine dial up users beating their heads against the wall waiting for videos to load and all the pauses.

Trying new ways to sell is the way to go but people that don't have high speed internet connections are left in the dark unable to use some of these advanced web sites.

Good luck. Always remember that buyer traffic is king and without advertising you site will be dead.

123exchanges just launched their payment gateway to allow merchant/ecommerce sellers to collect payment online via paypal instead of just selling locally. I checked it out and it's pretty cool. You can read the blog here about the news: http://bit.ly/zFKxxd
