I just noticed that today ebay's listings (as on the PSU chart) have gone over 150 million !

That is a huge increase from a year ago when they were on 110 million.

That's 40 million new listings in a year!

Offering sellers to list hundreds, if not thousands of items for FREE is propably the reason in the spike in listings.
Looks good on paper for the shareholders.

I agree the free listings may be driving it.

But its not a "spike" its been a steady increase.

Yes but sellers don't mind listing for free and paying if the item sells.

But I bet that if ebay dropped the free listings their number of listings would go down by a huge amount considering the sell through rate these days.

LOL. I just listed a couple hundred items on their last free listing. I had 17% sell through. Of course these are lower priced items that have been listed 1 to 4 times before unsold. Fortunately these are all items listed with GarageSale so all I need do is tell GarageSale to upload them at a set time. The reason they sold is likely because of the Xmas season - people are mad to buy anything. They sold not becaus eof anything eBay is doing - they actually get listed lower in searches as they do not have free shipping.

The listing numbers are up do fre listings and it Christmas season. The free listings have to do more with eBay manipulating their stock prices and investors than actually giving a damn about their sellers or to do with the fact ebay is a lot less popular than it is now due to eBay policies. Just look at other posts pointing to eBay's many accidental mass listings from other sites they own during our boycotts to know its all about stock manipulation and suckering in investors.

seewhatimsellingnow, I lose the same time in any "free" posting site. :lol:

The only difference between an eBay to any eCrater/Bonz/Blujay/etc is that I can lose my time offline with Turbo Lister. :lol:

luckyalive, you are right the "show" to the investors can be other excellent reason to the "free" promos.

A question - If you list 1000 items for free and few of them sell, won't eBay drop you because of low STR - Sell Through Rate?
Isn't better to list 50 better items for free with an STR of 25% than 1000 so so items with an STR of 10%?

@doucelfrance

I think it would be better to list on a site that does not requires you to be a university professor to understand their rules, and to work out the best selling strategies.

LOL Dignam- ain't THAT the truth!! :D I get sooo sick of Ebays stupid policies, rules and seller criteria- I'd love to know who their 'brain-child' is- that just sits and thinks up these things everyday. They've taken ALL the fun and enjoyment out of selling.... Betty Lou
