I live in southwest Missouri, and several acquaintances/friends I know at the live local auctions I attend very regularly, have had much sales success at a swap meet in Canton, Texas, ..yes, a long drive from southwest Missouri, but they have all said, you can't beat the Canton show if you have decent stuff to sell, you make money even with 3 dollar a gallon gas and you can camp on the grounds...I might do it soon, but wondering if Canton closes for the winter? don't think it does, but would hate to drive near 600 miles only to find it closed for the winter..

I've been selling at Canton for nearly 10 years and depending on the weather, I make $. It also depends on the time of year and what you have to offer browsers.
Since Hurricane Katrina though sales have been down and the overall down economy doesn't help either.
Comparing to what I made in say 2002, sales are down by about 40%. Add the ever increasing cost of fuel, vendor fees, meals, etc....You get my drift.
There are similar trades day events in most states.
Check out whereitsatmagazine.com for your local events.

Several years ago I started searching for local 1-day small town festivals and have been very pleased with the success. Usually lower vendor fees, annual events only, which tend to bring in locals who have moved off, but return for their annual hometown festival.
The success also depends on who's running the event, promotions, competion, number of vendors, weather, etc...

the swap meet around here, closed I-44 Swap Meet was a good market..I started out there back in the mid 90's after moving to sw Mo. from Raleigh, N.C. in 1992..I started selling at I-44 Swap Meet with lobelia hanging baskets, and tomato plants, and potted shrubs, even hired my twin brother to sell for me on shares, housing business was booming back then and a guy could sell potted shrub after potted shrub to the landscape contractors dressing up new lots, lobelia easy to grow and was cheap seed, liitle startup cost..tomato plants would sell out easily, and I only had a 10'X16' greenhouse since I was working a full time job for the "man".. the Drive-In at Kansas City is supposed to be a killer market as well as Jacob's Cave near Versailles..
