Anyone care to share your thoughts on how to best start blogging?

I've been selling on eBay for a few years and I'd like to step it up and thought perhaps a blog would be the way to go before moving to additional venues.

I need to do this as economically as possible at the start and was thinking of using a free blog.

Any suggestions on hosts and or sharing lessons learned would be really appreciated.

If you'd like to see my ebay store it's at My Store

I've done some intitial experiments with this starting a couple years ago. Due to the often limited traffic off ebay sites get the basic plan was to place blog posts about items for sale and then link to my store with a banner. The blog would also get traffic simply from people who could use it for research purposes as many of the items are unusual, one-of-a-kind, antiques, and so forth.

I also sell bulk lots of every day items which really would not fit into the unusual category so placing these on the blog would probably tend to "cheapen" the appearance of the blog.

I've experimented with Google blog and Google site. The problem I see with these is that although they allow for different choices they are rather inflexible in that you have to work with their formats, widgets, and so forth. I find their web editing to be too slow as I am use to uploading web pages via ftp - drag them to the ftp application and it uploads them in seconds. So you might be better off using your own html templates which you resuse over and over again, but simply replace the pics and description. You really do not want to be redoing your listings just to post them to a blog - you want to do the pics and content once and place them on ebay and the blog.

This brings up the question of about just skipping the blogs altogether and simply springing for a hosting package for your own site. You could use the site to host your pictures for ebay or any other site. Another problem with Google blogs is that they may not decide to index your site if its essentially duplicate material from another site. Although, it could be argued that your auctions on ebay are available for a limited time and your blog serves as a archieve for research so they are not really duplicate material - however this is really up to Google how its handled.

Try use.com for free picture hosting.
