I don't need to recap just what a pain ebay is, according to their new stat page, I have sold nearly 3100 itmems for $300K since 1999, all of them handmade by me.

It has been a goal of mine to start a venue for the buying and selling of medieval-centric items. On Thursday, I got word from my webmaster that the site was ready to publically view, and we launched:

medievaltownsquare.com

I invited ONLY 3 people to check test it and comment, and well it's seems we are off to the races. Had 350 parge views yesterday with 80 unique viewers, 9 registered members, 2 from the UK, even sold the first item yesterday, and it was not one of mine. All this from telling 3 people to test the site.

It has been a long standing critique here of selling site about their lack of marketing, even though we are on a shoestring budget for now, I have been a long time member of about 10 message boards in my niche, boards that have over 60,000 unique users and I can let them all know for free.
We will be free until April 1, then i am looking at 5% FVF from there on.

If you have a product that you feel would be appropriate there, please check us out, the more the merrier.

I figured a long time ago that ebay would only fail from a "death of 1000 cuts", this is my small cut.

Thanks,

Eric Joseph

Congrats Eric! I think this is a niche that requires an auction site.

Eric,

A beautiful site!
This is what the niche auction sites should be about!

You may not make a billion dollars overnight, but the buyers and sellers in that niche will know where to go to get the items they want.

I hope some other sites join you and target a niche. IMHO too many of the smaller sites are concentrating on their profits and not enough on their customers (sellers and buyers) Artists (painters, sculptors etc) are starting to complain on etsy about the emphasis on crafts and vintage items and etsy is starting to nickel and dime the sellers with fees. I think a true "Art" auction site would be great.

And THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for setting up your feedback the way you have. Giving all sellers 100% feedback FROM THE BEGINNING and only taking it down when they recieve negative feedback is (imho) a must for the smaller sites. It's something that most other sites have missed and I think it's cost them and their sellers lots of sales, as sellers appear to have little or no feedback when they are actually very good sellers. artfire is the only other site I know that does this.

Nice selection of categories - thanks for including books and art. I'll be looking to list some books on armor, history, Medieval and Renaissance art.
Best of luck with the site!

:)

Eric, You might want to think about other period reenactors too. I know the whole reenactment thing is going strong.

Hi,

We have been up for a week, I have had 2 sales and another seller has had a sale, but the big news is that we are averaging 1400 page views a day, from about 600 unique viewers, we are up to 26 users and 20 items for sale, but it looks like we are about to get a try out from one of the largest SoCal ren faire vendors and all the cross promo that goes with it.
