Amazon.com Inc.1Amazon.com Inc. Mass MerchantOnline Sales:$34,200,000,000 Growth:39.5% See More . reported in a recent financial statement that the state of Arizona has issued it a bill for approximately $53 million for uncollected tax on retail sales.
In its annual 10K financial statement for the year ended Dec. 31, 2011, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the world’s largest retailer by web sales says Arizona issued it a bill last November for tax and interest related to sales transactions from March 1, 2006, through Dec. 31, 2010.
“The State of Arizona is alleging that we should have collected a transaction tax that is similar to a sales tax on applicable transactions during those years,” Amazon says in the SEC filing. “We believe that the assessment is without merit and intend to vigorously defend ourselves in this matter.”

| good for Amazon! if Amazon does not have a warehouse in Arizona then I see no reason for them to be paying a trumped up tax charge.. |

| Another vote for Amazon! Arizona can go to hell! Perhaps Amazon should suspend sales to Arizona for 2 weeks with a message to customers that their state government tried to exhort money from them and thus ultimately tax its own citizens. |

based on the previous supreme court rule arizona has no claim per sales tax.
what continues to mystify me is why states like PA, where amazon does have physical presence, don't nail them for sales tax.
PA, like many other states could certainly use the money, and i cannot imagine it would be cheaper for amazon to move to NY or NJ to service the north east/new england. |

In the past two years, Amazon has been slapped with some huge tax bills. In many places, online sales are not matter to tax, but that will soon become the exception, instead of the rule. An increasing number of states are instituting or trying to institute internet sales taxes. You can also read further: More states pushing for online sales tax
Paying taxes is one of our responsibility. But this online tax will surely affect online business and other would be online business. |
