PayPal made what at first glance appears to be a minor change in the way it sends payment notice emails to sellers, but it's having a huge impact on some sellers' operations, and merchants discussed the issue on various online discussion boards throughout the day on Wednesday.

Normally when PayPal sends merchants a "Notification of payment received" email, the "From" field is populated by the buyer's email address. As of late Tuesday evening, PayPal switched the protocol to enter the static email address "service@paypal.com" in the "From" field rather than the buyer's email address.

Yes, and when you hit the reply button on your email it goes to the wrong email address.

Anything to make things harder for the seller....

It wasn't that big of a deal for me, as when the buyer pays by the dreaded e-check it comes from @paypal.com as well. If you scroll through the email, there is the email address for the person. Sometimes it was actually on the header line which made it easier to find. A nuisance sure, but nothing to cry over for me.

Gee Sidreb, you can't open the email, hit reply and change the email address?

I'm with Donald, doesn't bother me. I always open the email from paypal, and then open a new browser page and check to see if the money is there.

Update:

"PayPal Reverts Notification Emails after eBay and Etsy Sellers Protest"

PayPal caused a major disruption to sellers on eBay, Etsy and other venues when it changed the format of its payment-notification emails last week, but after an outpouring of complaints by sellers, the online payments service reversed the change this week.

On Thursday, EcommerceBytes wrote about the disruption. Normally when PayPal sends merchants a "Notification of payment received" email, the "From" field is populated by the buyer's email address. On January 24, PayPal switched the protocol by entering the static email address "service@paypal.com" in the "From" field rather than the buyer's email address.

Many sellers have designed their backend around the transaction email, and as one seller stated, "this tiny little change completely upsets the whole system."
