Carol,
Trust me I will not be using the standard bulk lister(I agree is sucks), but a modified version that DOES WORK, however your enthusiastic support is appreciated!
Seriously though I have never found a script that out of the box was perfect and have had to modify 99.99% of them to get them to be the way I want them.
Most of the changes we will be making to the site will come after the pending 5.24 update to PHPProBid and there will be literally hundreds of changes we will make to the core script at that point in time to MOD it to our specifications.
If you have any other constructive input please feel free to post it here.
Best regards,
Rick |

Actually if you had read much of the other thread thread, you would have seen that it too is about the Php-Probid software and I'm not the only one that thinks it sucks. I'm just maybe the most vocal one.
After literally wasting days with several other sites that use this thing, trying to list just 125 items, I found I could do it in about 1/2 the time just doing it one by one on the site itself.
But as your site is a niche site for software and scripts, you won't have to worry about me any more.
Sorry to have bashed your site.
It's just that it seems that every new site that comes here thinks they have the "cat's meow" of sites with that Php-Probid script and don't seem to realize that there are dozens of others sites out there already and we've tried many of them.
I guess some of us are just getting jaded about the whole "new site" thing.

Carol,
Thanks for the input.
On reviewing the PHPProBid script the bulk lister was the weak link, however I also knew that with my programming background that I would be able to MOD the script to my specifications and improve on what really is a great product from the PHPProBid Team.
I too am not one that is going to just jump on every 'new site up and running' auction site. I think that the ONLY way to have a successful site is going to be niche auction sites, which is why I decided to open up Script Commando the way that I have as a niche site for scripts and software and related services.
The issues with the bulk lister are a server (time-outs, file size restrictions etc.) side issue as much as they are a script issue, because many site owners use sub-par servers(cheap) to host their sites and they have no control over the server setup... I don't have that issue as I have complete control of my server network(root) and I control the server environment 100%.
Just for kicks, when I release the bulk lister on my site I will PAY $100.00 for you to use it and post an honest review here on this site after uploading 500 test listings. Maybe then I will be able to turn the most outspoken critic of this bulk lister into my site's greatest promoter.
Best regards,
Rick |

Script Commando, the issue with the onboard "bulk lister" in PHP-pro - PaxBulk - is a bit more than server issues. It's as basic as the software not being able to import a useable document, even one that is created and exported from within the software itself.
This issue translates to sellers as: you may have thousands of items on a spread sheet, but you're going to have to manually add each and every one to this lovely "bulk lister". From a seller's point of view, it's useless.
We're not wet behind the ears with respect to bulk listing. Carol uses OpenOffice, I use Excel. Whether using macros/pipes, csv or tsv, we're competent and capable of importing/exporting bulk lists with hundreds of auction sites...unless it's the PaxBulk software that comes with PHP-pro.
I hope that gives you a little insight and is helpful in your journey with your auction site.
Best good luck in your endeavors! |

Thanks for the input.
Yes, I do understand that the bulk lister script itself has issues(sucks period). I was not stating that it was a server side issue only.

The issues with the bulk lister are a server (time-outs, file size restrictions etc.) side issue as much as they are a script issue,
I have over 5 years experience in writing scripts in php, cgi, java, .net, VB, C++, ASP etc. and I will rewrite the whole crappy script if I have to in order to make it work the way I want it to and the way YOU or other possible users NEED it to! If I really wanted to I could write an auction script from the ground up, but I find it much easier to MOD something that has already had the 1000's of man hours invested into it for the basic functions.
I think that we are all in agreement that the bulk lister with PHPProBid sucks. I am saying that I will have a bulk lister that works, this includes importing CSV files etc. and being able to control everything from your desktop application as if you were doing it via the site directly.
When I release the bulk lister I will pay both you and Carol $100.00 each to test it out...and post your reviews.
Confidence.... It's a lifestyle!
Have fun!

Rick, you're on. I'll be happy to beta test your Bulk Lister and write a review for you.
Just give me a heads up and a category (I only have *stuff* - no scripts) when you're ready and I'll try to break your BL.
If you write an app that integrates easily with PHP-pro, chances are you can make a good amount of $$ cleaning up behind Robson's programming nightmare!
Thanks for the invite. I'm looking forward to seeing what you roll out for sellers.

OK, I have decided to take the plunge and develope a bulk lister application from scratch for PHPProBid sites. Maybe I am insane?
It will import databases correctly and it will have all functions of the site that you are uploading to and will be a 'stand alone' application. For instance you will not need a separate installation of the bulk lister for every PHPProBid powered site you want to post to and I will also make it so you can post to all sites you are registered with directly with only one running of the application. We will also create port functions to convert databases from popular formats to ones usable by the application.
I will be meeting with the rest of my development team next week to put together the features that will be included in the Beta Version. I anticipate this project will take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to complete so be patient. I will post updates at this site.
This will be a FREE application for clients, however it is a PAID application for site owners as I will have to spend a considerable amount of funds to put this together. (Pricing to be announced at a later date) If I break even when this is all done, great! If not, then I guess I will have another tax write off!
Need found, time to fill it.....
Regards,
Rick

Whoa, Rick! You're decisive! That's a huge undertaking...and when you pull it off, site owners and sellers alike will be appreciative. Are you insane? Yeah, ya' prolly are! But there are much worse and boring things to be in life. Methinks all creativity is touched with insanity...at least that's my excuse, and I'm stickin' to it!!
Aaaah, the "Glitch Witch"...I created this for a buddy. She posted above me. The Original Glitch Witch: CrystalStar. If a server 5 racks over has a glitch, it will effect her. We pass the honor around as a few of us hit rough cyber from time to time, but she's the reigning queen!
Please do keep us updated with your progress. I hope you don't truly loose your mind between programming a new app and getting an auction site off of the ground!!
Insane? Yup. |

About 60-70% of the development for this project will be done by my other team members and like a director of a movie I will just tell them which scenes to edit, cut etc.. until we have the product we really want. I quite simply have too many other projects in the works to devote 100% of the next 4-6 weeks to this one, however I will be the 'Chief Developer' on this project.
As we get a working version put together I will have some BETA Testers beat the crap out of it and will post a sign up for BETA Testing at that time. I personally can't figure out why the other developers haven't paid attention to the users of their applications and made them work correctly....
Also, if one of you wants to send me an example of the structure you use for your databases that would be great as I will be making it so that popular DB structures are compatible by default with the lister.
Have fun!
Rick

OK Rick,
I was seeding in the greenhouse most of the afternoon and just got back to this fun thing I started.
If you read the earlier part of the BidLink.us thread, I think you will get a good idea of the problems we all have with the bulk lister. It got to the point that Sid decided to switch software rather than try to write a fix for the Pax-bid lister. I don't know if he's bought it yet or not. If he hasn't maybe he would be your first sale.
Honestly, there are so many sites using this basic software, that someone that comes up with a loader that REALLY works should be able to make some money.
When I have a chance later I'll send you a PM with my email so I can send you some example files.
