Posters on this board(well some posters you know who they are) have thrown up so many red herrings on web payment services that it helped very little in my search for reliable services.
All the hype over greenzap and stormpay....the disappointment with Pre-Paid ATM and Swisspay.
Still for all of Paypal's problems and bad attitude its one of the most popular and if you can stomach it alot of people use it ,its where the clients are......still skipping it for a merchant account may be worth your time. I still use Paypal but encourage buyers to pay by other means.
Paypal for Merchants
Better then Paypal is europe friendly Moneybookers now with over million users ,once only for gamblers its branching out into paying for Skype (increase of awarness for ebay users) and shopping sites , a good service on the rise
Money-Bookers
The infamous E-Gold has been languishing online for many a year but this is its first breakout year with more and more users, great for those non-ebay sites or buying a condo in Namibia.
E-Gold
For international users , I've heard alot of good things about "Auction Checkout" ,although compared to the resources above I know less about this service ,it is a bit fee heavy , and its options for intergration with exhisting Moneybookers or Merchant accounts seems a bit redundant .Auction checkout is the only one on the list I have not used myself but have considered it and heard alot of good news about it.
Auction Checkout

Canada Only Services
A very nice reputable service for Canada that used to be the payment service for eBay.ca before Paypal arrived. User base is small and of limited use but if you have alot of Canuck clients and have CAD account may have a use for it.Also allows faster upload of funds to Paypal for Canadians through hyperwallet. A couple of credit-unions in Canada promote Hyperwallet for its users ,while larger banks in Canada promote Interac-Certapay payments.
Hyperwallet (Canada Only)
Another good Canadian system is Interac-Certapay , through online banking it can be used on eBay. Its promoted by the larger banks through online banking. Most online banking Canucks are aware of this service and can be convinced to use it but few have used it themselves.
Interac Certapay
As for Merchant accounts one of the most reputable ones is Canada's "Beanstream" whose services are used by alot of Canada's online stores. RBC reccomends them for example. (I presume Canada only)

I've been using it more frequently over the past year and find it easier to use then Paypal and alot less trouble.
Its worked smoothly for me , although when I first joined years ago they made alot of changes.
It can also be used with services like Skype and is getting popular oversea's , I like the service , only wish more customers would use it  ,but thats getting better.
Some of thier choices are bit goofy , such as can't hold Foreign currencies so you have no Forex options which would have been cool.
Other then that I give it a strong B+ (to Paypal's strong C+) |

i believe it can be used in the US also, if you have an account at one of the participating banks. unfortunately the nearest one to me is 2 states away!

| I got an unsolicited message recently from eGold - not certain how they found me, but it looked like a spoof! Of course, it got filed so I can't even share what it said...Before that message and this thread (thank you for posting BTW), I'd not heard of it... :D :D |

I actually have 2 Egold account but what's the use? You can't use it anywhere anymore and you never could transfer funds to Paypal.
I did check my Moneybookers account. They still have me in their DB too. Talk about a shocker. will have to look into it a little more before deciding. |

E-Gold is pretty good and there are services to withdraw funds. ,who you choose as an exchanger is often the bigger choice so shop around.
You can always use it on your own site and with regular customers.
e-mails are likely spoofs ,E-Gold tends not to contact anyone but scammers are inspired by E-Gold and despite its smaller status with public it seems to get the hacker attention of larger players like Paypal
There are a ton of others out there ,only other one with good reputation is "Gold Money" but its less popular and I've never tried it other then to visit the site. |

I've never heard of Gold Money. I remember Cyber Gold from years ago. ( Not an online payment source.)
Got a link or is it simply goldmoney.com? |

http://goldmoney.com/
They want more documentation then many of the others and they have a growing reputation amongst "gold bugs" as a better service then E-Gold. (sort of like Mac verus PC)
For example many of the more reputable exchange services narrowly offer a better % rate for Gold Money transactions which seems to throw "gold bugs" into fits of joy.
Perhaps it is a better service I don't know , but I'm more interested in the amount of Consumers using it so for now I prefer E-Gold
Now if we wish to be really serious the one to consider is the E-Dinar which is actually the most popular gold payment system in the world and dwarfs the others and has a far more wealthy client base then typical.
I have not used Gold Money or the E-Dinar |

Since I come from a non-paypal accredited country, we widely use www.xoom.com as a paypal processor. Xoom is accepted by Ebay.
Another non-paypal althernative that I use is moneybookers (also accepted by Ebay). At first, I had difficulty having myself verified due to the very strict process but I understood that it was for the protection of the merchant and buyer. Moneybookers know who their customers are after the verification process.
I also have an e-gold account and a verified goldmoney account. Not to mention a pecunix and alertpay account too.
Out of the ones mentioned above, I haven't used alertpay yet in an actual sale.
The least costly for buyer and seller is simply e-gold. The charges only come in once you "cash in" your e-gold via the exchangers. Please note that since e-gold is a gold-backed currency, it fluctuates with the price of gold on a minute-by-minute basis as long as the gold market is open.
Hope this helps. |

The least costly for buyer and seller is simply e-gold. The charges only come in once you "cash in" your e-gold via the exchangers
Well E-Gold does have fee's other then the exchangers
A monthly fee "The Agio fee is 1% per annum."
Also a spend fee despite the name is based on the Recipient Account , the typical fee's for a transaction are only about 1.25% or 1% , more for micro spending and less for big spends
E-Gold fee's are fairly good ,especially if you intend to spend E-Gold rather then deposit back into cash.
Otherwise you face exchange fee's which the industry standard is 2% + price of a wire , or a bank cheque via courier. If you are paying more then this then you need a new exchanger.
So E-Gold can be slightly more expensive then Paypal and other services but under some conditions can be alot cheaper.
E-gold has a reputation for being high in fee's but there are some advantages.
Advantages & LoopHoles to make E-Gold better then Paypal
1. First in some countries exchangers offer "NO % Fee" to exchange e-Gold and only charge a flat fee. If you trade in lets say $1000 it equals to 1.5% and this includes the price of a cheque ! So first big withdrawls through right exchanger can be better then Paypal.
2. Hidden Advantage of E-Gold , alot of exchangers don't play games with Forex , Paypal often charges 2.5% , a hidden cross border fee. In most cases you will less of a skim due to Forex since you have been paid and withdraw on the gold market. Also you can time your withdrawls for best advantage when Gold is on the rise.
3. Gold is a fairly stable standard , and depending on your country it may be alot safer then your currency's stability.
4. If you are from a remote country E-Gold may be your only alternative , and some exchangers provide ATM use with your card. It can be expensive but for remote countries this may be cheaper then Money Orders from other countries.
So be aware E-Gold does have fee's and it can cost you more then Paypal or services like it , or it can cost you alot less under certain conditions. Much depends on your exchangers , the size of individual transactions , how big the lump amounts you withdraw and the options for the form of withdrawl you have with exchangers.
When figuring it out , remember to consider the hidden fee's of alot of services like Paypal have. |
