According to the article at http://blogs.zdnet.com/Google/?p=208 there is some evidence that the long-rumored Google-sponsored competitor to PayPal may actually be coming out soon. The "evidence" is the existence of several new domain names (googlecheckout.net/org/info) recently registered by a company called DNStination, Inc. which is actually a 'front' for Google.

Combined with GoogleBase, GoogleCheckOut should at the very least cause Meg to lose some sleep.

What's taking them so long, anyway???

Google Payment System or Google Wallet is already here in an early form .......well,for certain vendors in the USA its currently under testing but it must be fairly broad because I was invited to use it.

Takes a long time to process through banking rules and regulations, boards, approvals, secure FDIC and pass through insurance, plus the security, programming, alpha testing, beta testing and everything built on a foundation scaled for global growth.

It's a monsterous undertaking. If it's open for general use in the next 6 mos, it'll probably be considered an "on time" project, been what, about 2 yrs?

It's good news that the gates are cracking open to let the first few in. :-)

I'll just go ahead and be the one to say it...

couldn't they just be gearing up for THEE competetion against eBay???

If you stop and think about it... of all online destinations - of all identifiable dot com's - and of all places people would FLOCK to and start selling in droves, wouldn't that be Google?

PSU members and a handful of sellers have obviously expressed interest in selling on other sites besides eBay (and some INSTEAD of eBay) - but for the vast majority, although miserable they simply won't leave eBay until an EQUAL alternative is available.... Google could be that alternative, EASILY!

even my grandma goes to Google lol

Hi Guys,

Is it only me who worries about Google wanting to be the worlds information repository? Holding all information, about everyone, in every way.

I truly believe this is the way these guys think and I am worrying about it..............

Tell me if I am wrong.

ooooohh!!!

I didn't think about that twist! ie; new world order etc

hhhmmm

but then again - I don't see the difference between that and trusting these smaller auction sites with bank, birth date, credit card and full name information.... all they don't ask for is your social security number - with that I suppose some real damage can be done by a site owner none of us really know

but that might be taking the paranoid mind set to the next inappropriate level

Actually most smaller sites don't ask for such things. The few that do....well...I think they have heard from more than one seller about it.

I never give out the info.

If they want me to be verified...PP- No other way!!

Something few of us consider enough. We trust strangers (and let's face it, mostly morons) with our personal information. Small sites that aren't monitored a fraction as much as eBay, Yahoo or Amazon. Yet we trust them anyways. Even when they shut down spontaneously, claim to destroy all the information then spam users later telling them to rejoin their sites. And these are the more well known sites (well, as known as alternative auction sites are).

Absolutely not, it's taking logic to the ground level. I wish I hadn't thrown our information around as I did... I won't be making that mistake again.

We are accepting payments through google. We haven't had a purchase through google base yet, but just canceled our merchant account and will be setting up people to pay us through google in the near future. We'll keep everyone posted!

Ditto on that - this whole thread got me curious so I checked out my google account and tried out a listing directly onto Google Base (html not allowed) and they gave me the option of processing payments for me (ala PayPal)

I got fifty-eight cents outta the deal when they deposited into my checking account

I dont see my record cleaner in any better position just because I went the Google route... but the Base is there none the less.... wonder why they havent really promoted this (yet?)

and for what it's worth.... they collect 25 cents and 2.5% for every transaction processed thru Google

Alan, Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean you aren't being followed. LOL
