What is the difference between having funds come directly out of a checking account and doing an e-check other than the wait for it to be processed. Why do buyers choose an e-check?

I've often wondered the same thing, and I don't know the complicated inner-workings of the maze that is called PayPal - but perhaps my own personal experience sheds light on it...
I had to refund a customer once, like I had a few times before - but this time my PayPal account was empty ($0.00)... so when I initiated the refund it gave me no choice how the payout would happen, it automatically defaulted to an e-check. Needless to say the customer waited 5 days for pending payment while the process cleared my bank.
And I notice if I have even two cents in the account that this won't happen - instead, PayPal would "instant transfer" from my bankcard associated with the bank account.

The only thing I can think of is that by doing it that way, the buyer has an opportunity to watch the seller's FB for a few days in case a lot of negs start showing up where none were before and then they can cancel. This would be a good ploy on high-end items, but my stuff is usually under $20, so go figure.

Some of my customers would like to pay by personal check and have given me all the information including check number, routing number, etc. However, I have not found a service that can process these checks for me. I know it is done and have had many companies accept may payments this way. I would appreciate any recommendations for a reputable service with low fees for items costing between $5 and $35.
