A new form of identity theft is becoming very popular on eBay. Crooks are beginning to steal the identity of customers with great reputations and selling items with their account information.

"It looked all legitmate, 100% satisfaction and whatnot...so I went through with it," said Kyle Samples.

Samples thought he was getting a 2005 Yamaha motorbike for $3000. After sending in a money order he never heard from the seller again or received the motorbike.

Donnie Dorsett also became a victim after receiving a supposed email from eBay.

“It said my account status was about to expire and I needed to verify my user i.d., my password and the credit card that I created the account with,” said Dorsett.

In order to protect its status as "only a venue", ebay cannot do anything meaningful about this type of fraud.

Protecting your ebay ID is fairly straightforward: NEVER respond to an email that claims to be from ebay or paypal, but ALWAYS go to your account from your own browser bookmark (or enter and double-check the url yourself) to check messages. When you get to the login screen, make sure that your browser really points to an ebay site.

When buying, never send more money than you are willing to kiss goodbye to any seller that does not accept credit cards or paypal. For big-ticket items, I personally would not buy from a seller that I couldn't contact by phone.

this happened to my best friend--some guy in england hacked into her account, began listing cell phones, laptops, etc., then took the money & ran. she never realized what a mess this could be...especially since ebay is so slow to respond to these situations!

Honestly, who is falling for these kind of scams? Of course, I feel sorry for the victims and all, but come on... these people are pretty dumb to fall for those phishing emails. When you're identity gets ripped off, I'm sure it sucks. But you gotta make these crooks earn it, don't just hand it to someone on a silver platter!!! Common sense just ain't that common.
