|

eBay and Google are locked in a battle over Google's new payment service, with both companies further clarifying their positions Thursday on why the service should, or should not, be banned from the eBay marketplace. And it appears the majority of people posting about the issue are skeptical over eBay's motivation in banning Google Checkout, believing it's a competitive issue, not a trust & safety issue as eBay has stated.
The battle may be a precursor to a future war as eBay readies plans to encroach on Google's advertising turf.
eBay spokesperson Hani Durzy said on Thursday that eBay had evaluated Google Checkout and it did not meet the Accepted Payments Policy requirement that it have a substantial track record.
When asked about Google's position that it has a long history in billing and payments, Durzy said "from a user point of view, it's a different service. In our estimation, it fails in at least one requirement of the Accepted Payments Policy."

I think most users of the Internet are a little leary of anything new and untested
Gbuy is untested yet has the name recognition of Google.com which is the world's largest online search engine
This article above is basically the battle between ebay not offering it's users to use this new untested tool--Plus it directly competes with ebay's paypal.com checkout system |

If they are going on the "no track record" theory, then why are they allowing the NEW BIDPAY?
That just started up. Most things are different with the way Bidpay operates this time. So they have no track record.
Or am I misunderstanding everything? |

123buy,
Please keep us updated on that.
I know I want to do that too, but won't have the time for a while. It will be nice to know any problems or glitches before I get started.

Dated July 6/06
Hi, I'm Rob Chesnut, head of eBay's global Trust & Safety organization. Completing a transaction with an appropriate, safe and convenient payment method is an important part of trading on eBay. While many of the payment methods offered by eBay sellers offer a high degree of safety and convenience, a few simply are not appropriate for the eBay marketplace. So last October, we introduced a global payments policy and -- in response to requests from the Community -- began a comprehensive evaluation of dozens of payment methods to determine which made sense for use on eBay.
Following this review, we've updated the policy to identify those payment methods that we've determined are not appropriate for the eBay marketplace. Please note that eBay's evaluation relates only to whether a particular service is appropriate for the eBay marketplace. These payment methods may, in fact, be useful services for consumers in other contexts.
The policy clarification also specifies the payment methods that are permitted on eBay.
If you would like to read more about the Accepted Payments Policy, please click here.
Sincerely,
Rob Chesnut

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a mass exodus of sellers who just said, "You're right, Mr. Durzy, I'm not required to use eBay, nor get screwed by the fees. Ebay is not the only game in town."
Like I've said before, alternate sites should just work on being the best site they can be and not worry about beating eBay. Ebay is looking like a sinking ship -- really makes you wonder what is going on and what the future will really be for this conglomerate. Did they finally bit off more than they can chew? In any case, the impression is they're out of control and some are jumping ship or running scared, or whatever. Or maybe it's just become a very unpleasant place to work
I certainly wouldn't buy the stock if I could. I don't think it's finished falling. |

| I'm a little surprised that Ebay still allows the alternative sites to use Paypal as a payment option. How long will it be before they pull that plug? |

Becky, as long as PayPal is making money from ecommerce and alternative sites they won't. If you look at some of the featured sites on the paypal site when you log out, it would be an extremely bad move to not allow other sites to use paypal. I hope that PayPal will buy itself back from ebay.
Cathy, great idea. everyone, whether they are ebayers or not, should email Durzy and tell him exactly that! Ebay isn't the only game in town. |

| Good point, Lynette, in fact if Google gives them any competition at all, it would behoove PP to implement some easier ways for buyers to pay from alternate sites. |

So maybe Google should just turn their back on Ebay -- yeah, fat chance, I know -- and concentrate on courting the alternate sites and building up a good rep there, as well as other e-commerce sites. Ebay would really be foolish, especially now, to pull PP from the auction competition. Talk about giving Google a gift
