Sellers have identified a glitch that affects shoppers' ability to find all relevant items when searching within eBay Stores. Sellers noticed the problem as early as July 10, though some have been complaining about eBay's search function for months.

eBay did not update its Systems Announcement board to alert buyers and sellers to the problem. However, "View and Report Site Issues," which is accessible through the "Contact Us" feature on eBay.com, carried a notice of the problem Friday afternoon.

Sellers noticed that searches in their eBay Stores did not bring back all results and realized that searching "Titles & Descriptions" (T&D), which is the default setting on eBay Store searches, would bring back fewer results than unchecking the T&D box and conducting a search. (Searching titles and descriptions should bring back more results than title searches only.)

Follow-Up:

AuctionBytes wrote yesterday about a glitch that affected the eBay Stores search function. eBay spokesperson Catherine England stated in an email on Monday that the "stores search bug" was resolved on Saturday morning.

Sellers had noticed last week that searches conducted within their eBay Stores did not bring back all results. (Searching "Titles & Descriptions" returned fewer results than title searches only.)

I've done searches over the past 2 days and all the results have been odd. No idea how they have them set up. But you would think it wouldn't be so hard for a huge company like Ebay to have the search working in favor of the sellers and buyers.

The funny part about that is, eBay seemed stalled on finding a fix or addressing the problem until some of us pointed out that it wasn't just a "Stores search" problem - the search glitch affected the Auctions search as well!

I was also beginning to see an interesting pattern with it. Of those sellers complaining on eBay's Powerseller Board about slow sales for one or two months, ALL of them who I checked suffered from the search glitch. Of those bragging about strong sales over the summer, NONE of them suffered from the search glitch. None of these individuals were aware of the fact, until I pointed it out to them.

It's easy to get the idea that it wasn't a transient glitch, but a long-term problem that was depressing the auction sales of many eBay Stores owners. In addition to their stores sales of course. In light of Meg's public statements about too many store format listings degrading eBay, and Cobb's statements about how the listing fee didn't cover the cost, it's also reasonable to draw a line from the "search glitch" to the current overt effort to discourage store owners.
