|

Hello. I'm a brand new member here on PSU and a disillusioned eBay store owner. I feel "tricked" by eBay's bait & switch store policies. I'm so glad to have found this site. It will help me make informed decisions about other online venues to market my products.
One of those will be eCrater. I started a store there several months ago when I was testing various shopping cart options for my online shops. It was extremely simple to set up. I like the nice clean look of the stores. I didn't keep developing my shop, however, because I ran into problems when trying to configure combined shipping the way I wanted it. Also, I was uncomfortable with the "hosted for FREE" message at the bottom of my store. I felt that it would give my company a "fly by night" image that people would not trust that I was a legitimate business.
For another store, I've been developing an OsCommerce shopping cart. That's configurable alright, but it's also complicated and very slow going! I'm getting there.
After these eBay fee increases, I am once again motivated to put some more effort into filling that eCrater store. I like that eCrater doesn't have the words "bid" or auction" in it's name. I don't want to haggle about my prices. I want customers who came to buy; not play games. For that reason, I'm steering away from hiBidder, Online Auction, Ubid, even iOffer.
But ... what the heck does eCrater mean?
I'm also considering Amazon and I'm wondering why no one seems to mention them on any discussion forums. I know that the monthly fee is steep $39.99 and the FVF are comparable or higher than eBay. Is that it? There are no initial listing fees and I don't get the feeling that they are "troubled" by sellers actually listing their products there.
Honestly, I would gladly pay eBay the higher store fees if they weren't doing everything they can to hide my products from buyers. That's my beef with the changes eBay keeps making.
Well, thanks for letting me vent a little. BTW, what does "the river" mean? |

ecrater is ecrater.
"the river" - has several meanings:
It means you sunk or you were saved.
The River is a slang used in Poker for the last card drawn
on the deck. Many gamblers found themselves suddenly
broke based on that last card - insomuch - they often
committed suicide and jumped off the Steamboat into
the River.
In today's poker terms - such as Hold'em Poker - the
dealer deals three times on the table - called "Community Cards"
The first three is called the Flop
The 2nd Draw is called the Turn Card or 4th Street
The 3rd Draw is called the 5th Street - or aka THE RIVER
When you hear someone say - I've been Rivered - that means
they've been beat!
When you hear someone say - I've Rivered it - means they were
saved by the last draw and won it.
Many people today do not realize where "the River" terminology
originated... it isn't new at all - and it was still the same terminology
as it were in Mark Twain's days.

I thought the River meant Amazon, at least over on the stores board where you're not allowed to mention names outside of eBay.
No idea what ecrater means, but it really is a nice clean site, with a sleek look to it that I enjoy. |

what does ebay mean? Seriously, ebay is now 11 years old and even 9 years ago only few heard of them and no one knew what ebay meant
what about google? what a name, huh - who would have ever thought that a place name google would be the search engines of all search engines?
so the real question is - what's in a name anyhow? |

google - yeah, funny name, but gets the point across. their search engine comes up with a goooooooooooogle (= # with 100 zeros after it) of searches in a short time!!
ebay - have no idea, but I like the 4-letter concept. maybe it's named after the SF bay (near the startup of Ebay company).
ecrater - somehow I want to associate that with the concept of "earth" - but maybe they just liked the sound of ecrater better. |

well, "google" for sure, I know it means the number [(1 x 10) to the power of 100] = 1 with 100 zeros after it.
I know Google didn't invent that word. |

I know Yahoo was what the founders' mother used to call her boys...those yahoos.
I figure ebay was an e-commerce version of a bay rented at a flea market.
I thought maybe crater referred to shipping crates. Who knows. Maybe it has to do with how our stores on ebay are doing..... |

found in the wikipedia:
The online auction site was founded in San Jose on September 4, 1995 by computer programmer Pierre Omidyar as Auctionweb[1], part of a larger personal site that included, among other things, Omidyar's own tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Ebola virus.
i've heard a different story, but i like this one!
and if ya think that's a hoot, check this out--in the next paragraph!
One of the early items sold on eBay was Omidyar's broken laser pointer for $13.83. Astonished, he contacted the winning bidder and asked if he understood that the laser pointer was broken. In his responding email, the buyer explained: "I'm a collector of broken laser pointers."
*sigh* those were the days...

Good Morning, All!
As to what "eCrater" means, I decided to go directly to the founder and ask. As soon as I hear back from him, I'll post the info here.
I am a new member of eCrater, trying the site out as a new outlet for online selling. So far, the site is very user-friendly and has a very well designed professional appearance.
Listing and selling is free on the site, so you may want to check it out.

| Yes, that was my understanding too, that the founder loved collecting Pez dispensers so he decided instead of looking all over to find them he developed a way for sellers to bring their offerrings to him and it went on from there. In fact I believe I have a cover story on that on either a recent Time magazine I have or Newsweek. I'll check! |
