well, this sounded exciting enough that I jumped right onto the site to log in and ad the feature...
you're asking for my merchant ID (which was easy to find) and my merchant key (which ISN'T so easy to find)
any tips?

To find these values:
Sign in to your account at https://checkout.google.com/sell. Click Settings, then Integration Center. Your 10- or 15-digit Merchant ID is listed in the Merchant ID for API field. Your Merchant Key, which is the 22-character string labeled Merchant Key, just below the Merchant ID. |

Thanks for the quick reply... and for what it's worth....
checkout.google gives me repeated warnings while going to retrieve my key that I "should not give my ID & key to anyone not partnered with google checkout" - I kinda figured this was just a canned warning - but also found it wierd that a site like yourself is NOT partnered with them... they have a short list of sites that are... but anyway, I'm signed on

I was pleasantly surprised to get a prompt response from Google Support when addressing an email to them about the above issue...
the person responding of course gave me the typical "we cannot approve nor disapprove of eCrater" bla bla bla... but he added this information which I found re-assuring:
I will gladly let you know what the Merchant
ID
and Key are used for.
Regarding the safety of it, in order to post a cart to Google Checkout,
or
perform any commands through the API you need the Merchant ID and Key.
Performing commands is part of the level 2 integration, while posting a
cart is the level 1 integration. Depending on how eCrater has
integrated
they will use your Merchant ID and Key for different purposes.
For example, logging into the "front-end" or user interface of Google
Checkout you need a log in and password, your Merchant ID and Key allow
you to access the "back-end" or API of Google Checkout. From the API
you
can send orders (carts) to Google Checkout and (level 2 integration
only:)
run commands on orders such as charge order, refund order, etc.
There are two ways to send an order to Google Checkout, one uses an
encryption method that uses your Merchant Key to "sign" the cart so
Google
knows the cart is authentic, and the other uses your ID and Key exactly
like a log in to put the order into the Google Checkout system.
(Level 2 only:)All of the order processing commands are done using the
second method, by "logging in" to the Google Checkout API and issuing
the
relevant commands.
So which does eCrater use (just curious)
