I don't know if this has been touched on here, but there is a group of sellers petitioning Google to open an Auction Site here:

Today, Auction Bytes posted this news story:

A small group of eBay sellers launched a discussion group on Google Groups to "beg" Google to consider opening an auction site.
The move comes after eBay announced a significant fee hike for Store inventory listings in an effort to "rebalance" the marketplace toward the core platform (non-Store listings).
The Google Group, called "Google We Need an Auction Site," was created on August 3 and had only 17 members. The Group had grown to a still-minute 80 members by August 9.
One poster wrote, "I am a small time ebay seller, who wanted to "ramp up" my sales, and was just gearing up to do so when ebay decided to "rebalance" their market place. I was squeezed out. There is no way I could keep my little store open. HELP ME GOOGLE!"

I think it's great that the 'action' has public attention and an article about it!!
How cool ks that? It will be interesting to see if/how/when google reacts to this news - since the press has picked it up! :D :D |

Bring it on GOOGLE!. just for the record. we have listed on  1700 items on froogle and 7 on blujay so far. results in sales have not nearly equaled ebay yet, but I can feel it coming. our google ads are getting a lot of attention and has tripled the traffic to our website. the sales are not happening but I think this may have something to do with us no longer useing paypal on our site. the traffic is there , the consumers are going thru the checkout process but when it comes to payment time thru our merchant account the transactions are stalling  blujay surprised us and with only 7 listing has produced results. we plan on beefing our blujay listings as fast as we can. once that is accomplished we will move on to our third site, not sure where yet maybe hi bidder. a little more homework to be done yet. I do hope that google makes their move soon. i think once they get the bugs out of their pay system we will see some major moves towards the auction arena. we for one do hope this happens and soon!

I've been linking to the google petition addy on my eBay DB siggy---the numbers are growing. (mostly Seller Central)
I'm awaiting a pink slap for it, but will leave it there as long as I can get away with it, then I'll switch off to my buying ID --
Does anyone know when the petition will be submitted? |

This again?
Just so that you know, part of the advertising contract between Google and eBay stipulates that Google will stay out of the auction business.
Google Auctions would be brilliant but it's unfortunately not going to happen. |

Brings back a few memories from the 'warpaint months'!
What with Ebay cutting fees, I guess it can only put extra pressure on the alternatives' site owners to come up with a novel way of competing against them. |

Just curious, Where did you hear that ??
Your post here is the first time I've ever heard that comment. I'm not doubting you, just surprised that I haven't seen this before. With all the talk off and on about people wanting Google to start something, how could I have missed that ?

So you work for Google?
You know their corporate strategy?
Those are big words coming from your fingers.
You should learn to NEVER say never about something that might or might not ever happen. |

OP was posted way back in Aug 06.
Google now has googlebase which I list stuff on and receive lot's of hits, but alas, no sales to date :(
I personally don't think ebay has any worries about GB taking away any of it's sellers at this time. |

You are totally correct.
It is a sad but true event.
I have posted on GB and gotten many looks and 1 sale.
I am pretty sure if Google wanted to have a auction site they would have a auction site.
And I am pretty sure it would blow FeeBay out of the top spot.
But that is just my opinion. |

Actually that link you posted, Daikon, just says they had tacitly agreed to stay out of each others turf up til the point when Google opened Checkout. Now the gloves are off.
That doesn't say they had any WRITTEN agreement about Google not starting an auction site. I think the guys at Google are too smart to agree to something that would limit them like that.
Ever since they bought that land near Phoenix (?) there has been speculation as to what that office complex is going to be for. I don't recall if anyone has posted a definative answer on that yet.
