I see there are so many companies to use for hosting. What should I be looking at when opening an ecommerce store? I will be selling approx 125-150 products.
thanks everyone

Hi Sal, welcome to PSU. Bandwidth, space, available databases are good places to start.

Here is a link to the ecommerc hosting provided at PSU
http://www.powersellersunite.com/hostingsignup.php click on the "30 GB file transfer" link will tell you about how much bandwith you will need.

As for space most ecommerce software is under 10 megs. Most of your space will be used by images and email. So unless you are selling digital videos and music a few hundred megs will be sufficient for space.

All you need is one database for your store.

Most hosts will have theses requirements. Other things you need to look for is price, customer service, and the ecommerce software you will be using.

Well I am biased so I will of course suggest the PSU Stores
http://www.powersellersunite.com/psustore_about.php

But it really depends on if you want to just find a webhost where you can install your own free open source shopping cart. Like Zencart, oscommerce, etc..

Or a host that already provides you with a cart like monstercommerce.com, bizhosting.com etc..

We actually do both.

There really are TONS of options out there.

I really want something that will not break the bank. I am just starting out selling some gifts and novelties. I am also learning how to design sites with help from a friend and going for classes in January.

Best of luck, Sal! Onliest thing I will say is stay completely away from Network Solutions. Big money drain, very little customer service, and not alot of perks for the $$.

I've been digging around looking for the perfect host for some time. Thought I had it with the place I have one site on right now, but down time issues have appeared, among other things.

Just bought a PSU store, haven't done much work on the site itself yet, but have done tons of exploring of the interface and demos. It sure looks like the biggest bang for the buck that I've seen in quite a while, and the customer service is great. Two thumbs up, I say! :)
