I finally bought my name, threw up some links and now I am ready to do few things to make it better, but it's been a few weeks and can't figure out how.

I thought I should use my word processing program to make changes to the code, and then upload the new index, but everytime I try to open it, it says it's too big,..to shut down other programs and try again,.......which I did, and even did a restart, but it still won't open.

Am I doing something wrong? I only have the MICROSOFT WORKS that came with the computer,..is tha the problem?

How am I supposed to make changes to the code? My original page was made with Yahoo! Pagebuilder,...is that the problem?

Probably.

You should also have Notepad or Wordpad on your computer depending on which version of Windows you are on. They would be better for adjusting the code anyway, as Word and Works add their own charactors that could confuse the code.

Something you might want to try is OpenOffice.org. It's a M$ Office alt that is FREE. It will open most M$ Office files and save to M$ format or to it's own format. I've been using it for a couple of years now and love it. It will also do things that Office doesn't. It can save as a PDF file and save as a HTML file. http://www.openoffice.org/

Personally tho for HTML files I prefer NVU. It's also a FREE program that is a HTML editor. You can look at the code or the WYSIWYG version for editing. http://www.nvu.com/index.php

Yah, all these programs have a few hours/days of confusion when you first try them. But NVU is pretty easy compared to some of the other "biggies" like dreamweaver or others.

Just check the tabs on the bottom to go to the different the various ways of looking at your page. I like that it has the code in numbered rows. Makes it easier to find the same section again when you look at it but find something that needs to be changed.

I've found that sometimes it won't change things in the wysiwyg view, but will in the code view IF you know the right code to put in. I don't always get the code right on my own. If I still can't get it, I save and close that page and open it again and it will usually work fine then.

Another trick is to do a "save as" when you first start, with a new name, if you are doing a lot of changes. That way if you muck things up, you still have the original to go back to and start over.

Everyone has their own personal preference, but I like to do all my HTMP/ASP coding in TextPad. It's nagware, every 10 or so saves it asks if you want to buy it, but it color-codes the code so after a little while you start to realize if you forgot a ">" or if your ASP code is properly formatted. It also supports multiple open files, so you can switch back and forth and copy code from one file to the next pretty easily.
