Hey gang,
Kinda stuck with a problem. I am running a store using zencart and dreamhost as a server. The mySQL database that uses zen cart is mighty slow, too slow for most people to stay on the site and shop.
I started using adsense, got some looks, spent some money, but do not have buyers. So I started reading through some internet marketing websites and it was suggested that if it took more than ten seconds to load a page, I'd be turning people away.
It takes at least 11 seconds for me on broadband. Oops.
As a host, I like where I'm at, but for reality sake, should I move and if so, are there places that would take my database without having to start over?

Heya Bub... dunno how much help I can be (none at all lol) - but thought you might be interested in my experience with your website....
Front page loads plenty fast - although MOST of your pictures remained little red x's (didnt load or were absent/corrupted). I clicked on movies and it opened in about 6 seconds (again, not all pics are showing) - from there i clicked on musicals - 26 seconds to load!
You're right - if I were an average customer I wouldn't hang around after that 26 second ordeal. Wish I were the bearer of better news!
Best of luck to you!

Hiya Bub! I also went to your site, and I'm using High-Speed Internet with Cable (and FF as my browser). The front page loaded in under 5.
I then went to 2 categories, and one loaded in 5 and the other in 6 (seconds)...I was able to see all the thumbnails tho and it seems to load reasonably fast for me. Couch potato sports says 1,xxx items, so I decided to 'stop there' as the largest area, and it loaded in 9 seconds, but there were 7 items that came forward...
So - a tad different result. Just so you know! :D |

Well.....it could be! I know that on various sites, users do have different page 'load times' based on browser of choice!!
:D :D
Good to know!! |

I am using firefox on a fast connection and the site loads pretty slow. There is no reason I can see why the site runs so slow. There are not a lot of images. Are you using caching? It sounds like dreamhost might have oversold the server that you are on. I would ask them to move you to another server.
I loaded up a demo of zencart that we have on our server just to see how fast it ran and it was pretty fast http://www.powersellersunite.com/~demo/zencart/
If you can't resolve your site issues with dreamhost we actually provide webhosting. See Sign up for hosting |

hey bud,
Your host is slow.. even their homepage is slow.. I would dump them..
What you can do is email them and ask them if they have a faster server.. tell them that the load time is unacceptable..
I run into this with my website every so often. And move..
As far as losing your data.. no.. go into cpanel and export the entire structure ( make sure you check the complete inserts box ).
when shopping for hosts picking the cheapest is not always the best..
performance is more important.. avoid the hosts that offer cheap packages..
Most hosts are really betting that you will probably give up on your ecommerce site or really won't notice that the performance sucks.
also watch out for hosts that have a really quick marketing site.. that does not mean your site will be on that superfast server.. |
