The CEO of eBay's Chinese site, eBay Eachnet, has resigned, according to ChinaTechNews.com (http://www.chinatechnews.com/index.php?action=show&type=news&id=4458). The report says Martin Wu will stay on as a consultant to the company.

Meanwhile, Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney issued a report after a recent visit to China and South Korea stating, "the Asia challenge to U.S. Internet companies is a material long-term issue, especially for eBay and Google." He believes out of eBay, Google, and Yahoo, the latter is the best competitively positioned in Asia. He stated eBay "may well need to develop a strategic relationship in China along the lines of the Yahoo!-Alibaba partnership."

Last year, CEO Meg Whitman said China was its biggest long-term opportunity in terms of local markets, and she was quoted saying, "Whoever wins China, will win the world." eBay invested $100 million in China in 2005.

Whenever I walked down the strip in Las Vegas and saw all the new casinos I laughingly thought - gee, its good to see my money at work. Same seems to be true of Ebay - only I'm not gambling my money away its being squeezed from my profits whether I like it or not! I can't help but hope they lose their shirt in China especially after Meg's remark about whoever wins China owns the world. Ebay just plain does not deserve the world.

Said it before and I’ll say it again..Ebay will never get anywhere in Asia, their business model is completely wrong for Asian mentality and buying methods.

Alibaba is very different to Ebay…surely the suits at Ebay can see the differences or just believe that the US model can work everywhere????....Derrr No!

Sadly for naive Ebay their time is almost up as the World on a whole is moving away from Auction format listing…they had a few good years but now they are floating adrift in a big Ocean with no Fuel

I can’t think of one Asian Country where Ebay are doing well & some of you may not know this but there are Local language ebay sites in:
S Korea..…Philippines…Malaysia…Singapore…Thailand…Japan…China…..Hong Kong…India

That must be 75% of the World population and they still have only 13-15 million daily listings…a mere tear in a vast Ocean

Must agree:

The Asian community is totally different compared to the U.S. or anywhere else in the world. Their way of thinking, culture and business revolves around different goals

As for the auctions format? I think that also is true and might one of the many reasons ebay's introduced stores and express recently

The U.S. sellers have paid dearly for ebay's expansion into China and hopefully all is not lost. Hek, if it was me? I'd close up in China, cut my loses and offer huge fee discounts to the U.S. sellers as a way of appoligizing --But that's just me

Elgato - I love your idea, but you're thinking 'about the customers' and the market. ebaY doesn't concern themselves with the customer, only the market. Admitting 'failure' after monies spent going after 'this' would be 'unacceptable' to the board (and I agree).

Unfortunately, they'll continue to overspend in the hopes of acquiring a 'small' chunk of that market, so they can call it a success.

I so agree the model is not 'aligned' with the market. Unfortunately, it would take a massive over-haul to make it 'fit'. And, that too - most likely won't happen, as it would again be a public admission of error in targeting the market there...

Yes, a shame to see how seller fees are being used. I'm glad I'm no longer funding the world-wide expansion of ebaY!

This is the smart thing to do, of course. Unfortunately, eBay is not smart, just greedy. Ebay western sites are the the company's cash cows -- with the sellers being the cows, of course. Milking those cows this last go-round seems to have backfired a lot -- less cows, less milk

don't worry about ebay.com.cn please.

yes. ebay.com.cn is not very good in china market.

but nobody can kill them now.

so i think ebay.com.cn have more chance in future.
